I just picked up a Winchester 1897 12 gauge manufactured in 1906. I sent it to a gunsmith to have it checked out, and he says its safe to fire.
I don't want to beat up an old classic like this, so I'm wondering what would be a good load to use in it for general plinking, etc. I know a fair amount about pistol/rifle ammo, but I don't know much about shotgun loads. What is the "dram eq" and how many oz. of shot should I use? I bought some Federal Upland Load shells.. 7 1/2 shot, 1 1/4 oz. Are these OK?
This shotgun was on consignment for $210, but the guy accepted my offer of $170. Gotta take into account $90 for the gunsmithing work, but it still seems like a pretty good deal to me. I wanted to have a Winchester over one of the Norinco clones, but wasn't sure I'd find one in good shape.
Any help or comments are appreciated!
