i'm interested in purchasing a rifle for long range target shooting.prefer it in .308 with extreme accuracy.any opinions?

If you're going past 900 yards, go with something bigger like a 300 Winchester or .338 Magnum. While the .308 will go past 1K yards, it becomes subsonic around 900 and won't buck the wind as much as those bigger calibers. Mind you though, if you're good at reading the wind and shoot often at long ranges (like the Brits do), the .308 will do just fine.

Not a whole lot of experience here...

But I have a Remington PSS in 308. I've shot 1 hole groups at both 100 and 200 yds. Very accurate, and not too expensive. I'm sure it would do well at long ranges, but there isn't a place in the area to shoot them.

Also depends on ammo. 175 Match (Fed) stays supersonic slightly past 1k, depending on the rifle.

I built mine in .308 off of a Mauser action (Vz24), and am quite satisfied. It all depends on how much effort you are willing to put into the rifle. Little things matter, and can cost money. My trigger was almost $200. I spent almost a week lapping in the bolt, and another couple days polishing the ways. I used a pull-through reamer for chambering (about $150 for the reamer) and a LOT of elbow grease throughout. I did get a deal on my stock....one of the varmint laminates from Midway that I finished myself, then used Marine-Tex to bed it top and bottom.

This is just to give a start on the work I did. A buddy of mine did a LOT of machine work on this thing, and it took about 4 months to get it together RIGHT.

If you want a good out-of-box gun, go with Iron Brigade Armory or Texas Brigade Armory. They're about the best guys I know for extreme-range weapons.

Plan on buying a VERY expensive piece of glass. I use a Nightforce NXS, and recommend them highly. In my humble opinion, the best glass for the money. Get good rings. Badger Ordinance rings are some of the toughest I've seen. They are also fairly expensive (around $100).

Best of luck!

Remington 700 VS or PSS.

I have a Remington 700 Varminter Synthetic. I put a Leupold 6.5-20x50 Long Range Target Scope on it and I have shot it very accurately at 800, 900, and 1000 yards. For a gun straight out of the box, I am quite pleased with it. I just finished putting two shims on my rear scope base today and I gained around 21-22 MOA for 1000 yards. Before I had to hold over and that was not as great. I suggest getting some angled bases and everyone keeps talking about the badger ordinance base, so go with that no matter what you get. But for right out of the box accurate .308, the Remington is hard to beat in my opinion. The only thing I changed was I did a little trigger work, but all the instructions and directions you need to adjust the trigger are right her eon TFL. Good luck.

thanks for all the recommendations.i was looking into the Robar SR90,Remington 700, Ed Brown 702,Steyr SBS Tactical or the Steyr SSG Precision.i was looking for .308 because that's what the military has been using so i thought they couldn't be wrong.

Gary,

Sorry, need to correct a false presumption here.
I shoot 1000 yard each Saturday, including this one, in which our range did a day long 1000 yard qualifier for new members.

Most members shot the course using 308 winchester cartridges in PSS rifles, or Varmint configuration. Ammunition varied from handloads to 175 grain factory ammo. Every person firing the qualifier is required to demonstrate proficiency by shooting a 2MOA group at 1000 yards. That's just over 20 inches and is not difficult to do with a box stock 308.

To demonstrate the ease with with this can be accomplished I usually shoot 2 groups, one with a 308 varmint remington, and the other with a 22-250 custom.........on bowling pins at that range.

I think the wide spread misrepresentation of the 308 as a 900 yard cartridge comes from the use of short range Federal 308 168grain Gold Medal, which was not intended for long distance, and some idiotic incompenents in the military procurement area with no idea of the capability of the cartridge.

How about the 22-243 Middlested?

This was featured in Precision Shooting magazine. Under 3/5 MOA at 550 yards and the writer was using it for 1000 yd+ P-dogging.

That's a fine shooter that's much flatter shooting than any .308 bore rifle.
