Recommendations for 30-06

If you were going to recommend a reasonably priced (<$400) rifle chambered in 30-06, what would it be? Prefer lever action if possible.

How would it compare to say, Marlin's lever guns, in 30-30?

Bacchus,

The only still in production 30-06 lever action that I know of is the Browning BLR. A very nice rifle. You might be able to find a used one for $400 but a new one will set you back more than that. I would recommend a Remmington 700 ADL sythetic. You should be able to find them for around $350 new.

A .30-06 will blow the doors off of any .30-30!

Ruger, Savage, new or used; used Remington 721s are good...Somebody's custom Springfield could be very reasonable, for that matter.

If the primary interest is deer hunting, it almost doesn't matter about the brand, if the bore is good...Most any of them can be tweaked a bit and have good accuracy.

which .30-06?

I recently purchased a Howa 1500 used, but in nice shape frow the uncle for 250.00. It has a Bell and Carlson stock and Redfield 4x scope. This gun is by far the most accurate hunting rifle I own. It will shoot 1" or under with darn near anything I feed it at 100 yds.( the sweetest part, though, is it likes the cheap winchester super x 150 grain power point loads best, at around 10.00/box. Howa rifles are very competitively priced new, and did you know that they used to make Weatherby's? You can pick up a new Howa for around 350.00 give or take a few.

Look for a good used Win, 70 . Best "Safety" in the world. Got my about 10yrs ago for about $275.00bucks. The guy used it for two season.I've used about four times in 10 years"Hunting that is" Most of my guns are pre-owned:)

If I were looking for a .30-06, I'd try to find a good used Remington 700 BDL. Failing that, a new 700 ADL. After that, Ruger or Savage, in that order. The .30-06 isn't typically a lever action caliber. You'd need a box magazine rather than a tube. As Art pointed out, I think your only real choice is the Browning. If you don't want a bolt gun, an alternative would be the Remington 7600 pump. Took my first whitetail with one in .30-06.

I don't think you can beat a Ruger M77MkII for the price. You should be able to find one close to $400 (new). Remember it includes the rings which on other rifles cost extra.

I have heard good things about the Tikka Whitetail Hunter which in some models can be had around $400 (new).

I found P-17 rifle ( M1917 30-06) in local store already sporterized,
I think still you can find P17 cheaper than M1903,

I reread the original post and noticed the mention of lever action. The only rifle of recent manufacture in 30.06 and lever action is a copy of the the Winchester 1895 of Teddy Roosevelt fame. Either Browning or Winchester makes it. Also, there is the Browning BLR, However, all are well in excess of $400.

30.06 is not a common lever action round. It is better mated with a bolt action for medium range work--an all around caliber.

I have a 30.06 (my favorite rifle) but if I were to do it all over again I would choose a short action 7--08 as my deer/elk battery.

Not a lever gun, but - - -

Savage sells a "package gun," their 110 rifle with a scope already mounted. I noticed that the Local Bass Pro shop had 'em in a choice of calibers for about 399.

If you have your heart set on a lever gun, the BLR already mentioned is a good choice. You might check the pawn shope for a Winchester Model 88 in .308. In most loads, you can't tell the difference between this and .30-06. Long discontinued, this model is becoming scarce, but they do show up fairly often.

Best of luck.

Couple of thoughts.
All the rifles mentioned so far are top notch, Savage and Remington both put out a good product.
When looking for a bolt action in .308 I really fell in love with, and purchased the Tikka Whitetail Hunter. It was slightly more than $400 but it came with a beautiful Walnut stock, adjustable trigger, match grade barrel, and the smoothest bolt I've ever worked on a production rifle.
If your willing to go .308 caliber vs. .30-06 and want to buy a used lever action Savage produced many versions of their Model 99 in .308. I've always had a soft spot for the Model 99 and would love to pick one up myself if the right circumstances ever came along.
Take Care
