Recommendation for skeet shotgun

Hello, I am interested in getting started with skeet. I would like to know your recommendations for a good entry level to mid level priced skeet gun. Also just for the fun of it, what is the BEST gun for skeet (price no a problem). Any tips for starting out with skeet would be great! I have been a shooter for about 15 years now (hunting and target pistols), but this is a new area. Thanks!

I can highly recommend both the Remington 870 or Mossberg Silver Reserve series over under. The latter is a great gun for the $. It has been getting great reviews lately and I can personally say I love mine.

I tend NOT to recommend any pump gun for skeet shooting. They work and I have aquaintences that shhot them well, but an Over and Under or a Semi Auto are better choices for the game when it comes to the "doubles". For auto shotguns I like the Remington 1100's and the Berreta 390 series but there are many other good choices. There is no such thing as a cheap O/U that will stand up to the rigors of a dedicated Skeet shooter and the 1000's of shots taken every year. I shoot around 8,000 to 10,000 shots a year in skeet alone. If you are thinking of getting serious about Skeet, get at least a Browning. If you deceide later Skeet is not for you, you will get a much more of your money back than with a low end gun. As far as the "no object on money" well,, there are many but Kreigoff, Perazzi come to mind. The start around $10,000 +/-. Look around and ask opinions of other shooters and see what they are shooting, I will bet most Skeet shooters are using a Browning with a few other brands. You might try the Forum in "Shotgunworld" as they are more competive shooting oriented.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was looking at the Remington 1187 (I do want a semi-auto). There are a lot of choices for it though. It is hard to compare prices with all the models and so many websites only saying Remington 1187 12 ga. Has anyone ever purchased online and where do you recommend for doing so? Haven't seen where it is worth it after paying S&H and the $25 fee to my local FFl. Thanks again for your responses.

I think for Skeet the 1100 might be a better choice. The 1187 is set up more for hunting rounds rather than the typical skeet loads. I have read of some having problems with the 1187 cycling, but then about as many saying it works ok,,,, I have bought several guns from CDNN in Texas and have had real good luck and great service from them. I don't recall if they handle Remingtons tho.

I used to use a M1100 28 ga for skeet and enjoyed it. I'm sure I've still got the gun, because I know I have 4 cases of Remington #9 shells for it (I had to move them the other day).

The most popular semi auto in skeet is the Beretta and it's well deserved.

Actually in my experience I would say an 1100 is the most popular, but I personally prefer a 390/391. If you want an O/U I would look at a Browning Citori or a Beretta 680 series gun.

Rem. 11-87

I just bought the 11-87 Premier on Thursday and shot sporting clays with it Friday. It fits me well, weight and balance make it swings easily, and looks great. If you get it, I'd recommend a better recoil pad. Someone suggested the Rem. R3 to me and I may try it. Still, no soreness in my shoulder. No misfires or cycling problems at all, right off the shelf. I'm sure you can't go wrong with the others, but the price was right for me on this and I'm pleased.

Good luck!

Thanks for the sugestions guys. I still haven't 'pulled the trigger' yet on the purchase. I am still looking and and trying to decide. A buddy of mine has an 1100 he is going to let me take out and try soon. I really like shooting something before buying. Helps to have friends with guns you like.

Skb

I had a new Remington 11-87 Premier that was a beauty, but it wouldn't extract light loads. It was very frustrating. After about 100 rounds I traded it. Didn't hear of other people having problems with them. I have an SKB O/U that works wonderfully and fits me well. SKB has a reputation for being very reliable and durable for clays, skeet and trap. There are many models available, and the 585 series all have the Briley competition chokes.

In my opinion the best skeet gun is the Winchester Super X2 with the beretta close behind.

The remington 1300 is a good gun but I absolutely hate the loading mechanism and the forearm wiggles. Remington really needs to fix that.

The beretta is awesome but it has an annoying button on the bottom that you have to push for no reason at all whenever you load the gun or want to bolt to stay in the rear position. It's an extra step you need to take and there is no need for it. Other than that it's a great gun.

The winchester Super X2 has the world record in hand thrown clays, it is the simplest gun to operate, and it is the fastest cycling gun on the market.

You could let me choose any shotgun on the market at any price and I would still choose the light version (aluminum magazine) of the Super X2. Performance wise it is the best skeet semi-auto shotgun on the market and I don't think that's debatable. http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=511&type_id=042&cat=009C

The super X3 is also worth checking out.

For optics I would use this:
