I am new to turkey hunting and hoping to find a good book to get me started.

Located in NC, have Remington 870 magnum 12 ga.

thanks.

i never read a book maybe should have but heres how i went about my first turking experiences.
1. Scout pre-season alot turkeys are creatures of habit and will pattern pretty hard around the spring time, note were and when they come into and leave fields clearings, ect.
2. Get permission to hunt it or make sure that it's public land.
3. Get a few turkey calls mess around with them all day everyday until you get the hang of it watch some hunting shows and compare your sounds with thier sounds..
4. Pattern your load to find your effective ranges of your shotgun.
5. Buysome good camo make sure you cover your face and hands also, get a decoy even if it's the little cheap ones they work too. find a place just of the turkeys usuall path, set up an hour or two before they're usuall time of travel usually like twenty yards off start lightly calling before they are coming out and stop when they get close and most of the time they'll come in good to your decoy then BANG

no book but..

camo and sit still.
get a primos box cutter and a slate-style call(look for one with instuctional dvd.)
call less often and with less volume than you think needed.
get to the woods 30 minutes before sunrise.
Be silent always. Be still always. Be ready to shoot always.
NWTH web page has a "lounger" seat or atleast get a foam pad.
get a short blind also. (it helps with the camo and sitting still.)
Spray down with tick spray and mosquito spray when needed.

When the bird gobbles on the roost get close but not too close.(this is the skill part)
set up and call. when he is coming in shut up and get the gun ready.
goodluck

great book

This is not a "how to" book, but a great read, about turkeys, turkey hunters, county folk and country places. Written 30+ yrs ago, before instructional DVD's, NWTF dinners on every corner, and the Outdoor Channel killing turkeys hand over fist.

"The Old Pro Turkey Hunter", Gene Nunnery, 1980.

A good book about the way it used to be. If you're a turkey man, you owe yourself to read this one.

Sit still, he's coming............

I'd definitely read The Tenth Legion by Tom Kelly. Not exactly a how to book but is a must read for all turkey hunters.
