Recommend red-dot sight for a revolver.

Hi all, I was thinking of either scoping or putting a red-dot sight on my Ruger GP100 and was wondering what you think are the best brands and why? I'm getting into accurate long-range shooting and hunting and am looking for something that offers great long-range vision and accuracy, while being sturdy and reliable.

Your text says "scope or red dot" but your title says "red dot". Sounds like you have decided on a red dot. If so, my post will not be useful to you. But FWIW I chose Leupold 2X EER scopes for my two S&W 629's (.44 Mags) and S&W M41 (.22 LR short barreled squirrel gun/target pistol deluxe). Have used them for 10 years with good success and no problems. Good luck with your choice.

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: Scopes of more than 2X have limited fields of view, magnify the wobble more, and are harder to see thru (esp in the field) due to smaller exit pupil diameter. Real benefit of a scope is putting the target and crosshairs in the same focal plane so you can see both sharply at the same time.

I've had good luck with UltraDot red dots.

I have an Aimpoint 9000SC on my 686. 2moa. Its a nice setup. Aimpoint is a bit pricey but well worth it,imo. The next best that I have tried is my dad's Ultradot, 4moa. For $150 its pretty nice. I've tried scoped but prefer red dots for close in target aquisition. You should try them all though. Everybody is different. I definately wouldn't go more than 2X scope power. Things tend to get washed out and targets can get lost more easily during close in encounters. Good luck.

If your purpose is long range 50 yards plus then a scope in 2x-4x will be ideal. Red dots are great for fast target aquisition, I shoot USPSA/IPSC and the C-More Serendipity is about the best in durability. I have two C-Mores and about 4 Tasco PDP scopes. I have two Pro-Point 1st model and two PDPIII. The oldest Pro-Point is about 16 years old now and sitting on top of my 16.5" TC Contender barrel in 45-70. josh

Joe, Is that ultradot a 1" or 30mm.....I'm trying to decide which to put on my 629 .44mag

Anyone have comments/practical/real comparison on 1" vs 30mm (1.181") for hunting

Ron

That's a 30 mm with the 4 minute dot. The 1" is great for target shooting, but I'd go with the larger units for hunting for their larger field of vision.

Good Luck...

Joe
