Recommend me a Ruger!!

Here's the score. In another thread I explained that I have been feeling a strong urge to consider replacing one semi with another revolver.
I may even decide not to make the swap, but this is something I am taking seriously and so would like treat this as though it were a plan set in motion.

And I would want it to be a Ruger. So please restrict suggestions to that brand.

Before you ask, I don't know what I want it for, except to shoot. I can't hunt with handguns in this country, so that is irrelevant.

I could use it for some IPSC shoots, or just range fun.

I could get a long barrel version and I'd be happy to mount a scope for the fun of it.

I can reload for .38/.357 and .44Spl/Mag.

I already have a 2" .38 (Astra 680) and a 4" .44Mag (Redhawk).

I'd happily consider anything from .357 to .454.
I would err toward a longer barrel given what I already have, I love the .44 caliber and I must say I have grown to enjoy its thumpy recoil, but that doesn't mean I could not appreciate something different.

And that, in turn, doesn't mean that I coud still not live with another fine .44!!

Ok... that is about it.

So which Ruger would you recommend and why?

Well then...You need to either find yourself a GP100 a Security Six or Service Six. Load them with your favorite .357 round and shoot away. While I believe any of these revolvers will provide you with the Thump you enjoy, they're also quite controllable.

I currently have a 4" GP100 and a 2 3/4" Security Six and they're both a joy to shoot.

Do you have a single-action yet?

If not, then there is your answer, sir. I suggest a flat-top 44 special New Model Blackhawk.

You know what the real true beauty of handloading/reloading is?

You can add a whole new caliber to your portfolio - all for the price of a set of dies & some bullets.

My - "beyond the .44 Remington Magnum" gun is a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt.
It's really neat to shoot a load that, in a .44 mag would set your teeth on edge (20 grains of 2400 under a .430" 250 gr LSWC), and have it feel like not much more than a regular load (20 grains of 2400 under a 250 Gr .452" LSWC).

Be my choice as well (in a .44 Caliber). Nothing beats a nice Single Action and the .44 Special is perfect for the medium frame revolver. Your choice of blued/SS and barrel length. Mine is blued and 5 1/2". Nothing wrong with the .45 Colt convertible flattop either if looking to move 'up' ;) . Not sure if it fits the IPSC (whatever that is) category though. I shoot for fun and for woods/home protection. I just don't like the peanut caliber much. Got to be a .4x .

May I suggest a Ruger Flat Top Blackhawk in .44 Special?

These guns are built on the mid-size frame as the old Three Screw .357 Magnums and are a sheer joy to shoot.

Either the Blackhawk or Bisley Model. While I'm not a fan of the Bisley, it is the more handsome of the two with its (fake) wood grips, and many men prefer the Bisley grip.

Before I get flamed for the "fake wood grips" comment, I know they are real wood, but are laminated and stabilized. No character whatsoever. Won't see 'em on my guns.

Well they do have a ton more character than those black plastic grip panels on some of the Ruger revolvers ;) . That said, I tend to agree with you. Most of my guns sport custom grips.

You already have the .38 special and the .44 Mag, so I think you should get the .357 Mag to add to your collection.

I would go for a GP100 , stainless or blue, 4" or 6".. what ever strikes your fancy (I prefer Ruger's stainless.. easy to maintian and the gun will look new for decades if you do your part). Then I would go and order a set of Eagle grips (below) for that "classic" look.

This shows a 6" GP100.. those are nice grips :)

grrr.. why did I look at that, now I want a GP100 to go with my SP101 !

Interesting ideas so far.

I like the idea of the .454 because it is the .454.

Then again, I like the idea of the SA's in .44Mag, especially the Bisley hunter, as well as the idea of the .45 Colt in that beefy BH frame.

However, I must say that downsizing with a .357 GP is gaining appeal too.

All the same, I am open to any and all suggestions.

Just for kicks

How about the LCR? Ugly as sin, totally untraditional, yet gets high marks for its trigger.

I've got the SP-101 in .38 and it is a pussycat to shoot. Love it.

The ones I'd look at:

Double actions (I like the odd lengths):
SP-101 3"
GP-100 5" (these area avialable, but not listed on Ruger's Website)
GP-100 Match Champion

Single actions
Blackhawk Stainless 6-1/2"
Vaquero 5-1/2"
Super Blackhawk 5-1/2" or 7-1/2"

Bob Wright is right on target, as usual. My 44 Special Ruger Bisley is a fantastic revolver. 240JSP Rem with 17gr of 2400 and 8 gr of Unique with a 240 SWC are fabulous loads. Mine is 5.5". It's an all steel revolver, unlike the standard BH and Vaquero. In an El Paso 1920 Cross Draw, it's a dream.

Since you already reload for your 44 Redhawk and presumably you've already got cases the simplest thing would be to get another 44 Magnum. If you get a 357 you will need to get a bunch of cases too, something to consider. And since you already have a short barreled double action I would look at a long barreled single action, either a Super Blackhawk or a Bisley with a 7.5" barrel.

There's nothing wrong with diversifying your collection though, that's what I've done. If a 357 suits your fancy I'd recommend either a GP100 or a Blackhawk. For just fun shooting I'd avoid a small revolver, although I do have an SP101 for carry. It's fun to shoot but my GP100 and my Blackhawk are more precise in my hands. And you've already got the snub nosed Astra so that's already covered.

I have six Ruger revolvers, one 45 Colt, two 22s, and three 357s. I want to get a DA 45 too. You won't go wrong with whatever you get.
