can someone please recommend me a new longarm?

this is my criteria:

-the budget tops out around $1,000
-ammunition must be relatively cheap and easy to find
-not a single shot action/pump action rifle
-not a .22 (already have a 10/22)
-not an AR-platform rifle (already had one, too flashy/ complicated, sold it)
-not an AK-platform rifle (already had one, too inaccurate, sold it)
-accurate
-fun to shoot
-(if shotgun) 12 gauge only

so far my most serious considerations are a Mini-14 (doesn't seem to have the same personal flaws i had with the AR/AK) and a remington 870.

i'm open to any suggestions though, thanks!

For range/target use, or all around handy rifle to have on hand for any purpose?

Either way, my go-to answer always comes down to either the CZ527 or the 550.

I would have suggested a M1 Garand, CETME, used M1A (if one were to be so lucky to find one in your price range). But, you determined the AR was flashy and complicated- so that pretty much puts you in the market for a bolt action, don't it?

The neat thing about the CZ's are the single set trigger. For regular field type hurry up shots- the regular mode will be ok. For target work and such, the trigger is pushed forward til it clicks- then the trigger is as light as a pound or two depending on how you have it set. I have 2 527's that have seen quite a bit of useage and have yet to have a problem with either one.

What do you want to do with it? 870 and mini 14 are (obviously) two very different types of guns. I don't know what other types of guns you have or if you like to hunt (birds or varmints). The 870 can be configured with different barrels to serve different purposes, bird hunting, deer hunting, home defense, etc. The mini can also serve different roles and at longer ranges. If you're looking for a simple gun to tear apart the 870 is pretty simple. Don't know if I helped or not?

what i would do with it is basically plink from time to time and take it out when i go hunting. so yeah, a good all around longarm.

A Middle of the road Savage,Ruger, even a T/C Venture bolt action come to mind & still have room for optics.

Man. You know the one thing that the M1 Garand, M14, and M1 Carbine all have in common? A 7.62 round. If you're gonna get a Mini, make it a Mini 30.

You could also get a CMP M14 for that price.

i would consider the mini-30, except that there is no 'ranch' edition of it (which would be the one i'd want) and is more expensive.

i'm really considering the mini-14, despite the fact that the 5 round magazine ( i live in new york) rocks in a bit awkwardly. I'll purchase a 10 round mag if i do get one that way i can actually get something of a grip on it when loading.

while we're on the subject--without starting a new thread altogether--is the "new" mini-14 (580 series and later) more accurate than the older versions? my understanding is at best it's a tiny bit less accurate than a entry-level AR.

In centerfire rifle calibers, its hard to beat a .223 for plinking - especially if you are willing to buy bulk boxes.

Tcan, those rifles use .308 caliber bullets, but the M1 Garand uses the 30-06, the M14 uses the 7.62 nato, and the M1 Carbine uses the .30 carbine round.
And the fact that their automatic, and military spawn,(makes them cool).
Anyway what is the OP going to be doing with said rifle?

.30-06 = 7.62x63mm
.308 = 7.62x51mm
.30 Carbine = 7.62x33mm

I think 7.62x39mm fills that gap between .308 and .30 Carbine rather nicely don't you? Imagine if the M1 Carbine was chambered for a cartridge similar to 7.62x39mm. The AR platform may never have come to fruition.

Plinking and hunting? Fun to shoot? A Lever Action 30/30 or 45/70...or a short Bolt Action in 308 Winchester, perhaps with a low powered eer scope. I bought my son a Rem 700 SY in 308 years ago and that is one sweet little rifle. Very compact and fast handling for a Bolt. I went sans scope and put peep sights on it for ultimate versatility. A superb short/medium range setup.

I dont think you can go wrong with the Savage.........great out of box accuracy. Go to the 30-06 for chambering. Ammo is available anywhere and inexpensive. If you have paid any attention, almost all chamberings are compared to the 30-06 for a base reference. It shoots well and can be used for all game in NA. The rifle and a decent scope will be well under your limit.

i would consider the mini-30, except that there is no 'ranch' edition of it (which would be the one i'd want) and is more expensive.

EVERY Mini-30 ever made has been a Ranch model---meaning set up for Ruger rings and redirected ejection---even the Tactical models.

I have a Ruger Frontier that I like very much ... there are usually some available on GunBroker..... Not as Tacticool as the new Ruger Scout Rifle, but more suited to the task I bought it for (Little kids' deer rifle)..... no magazines to lose.

Once I get a can for it, it'll be perfect: Short, Handy, with a short LOP, low recoil (and even lower w/ a suppressor), fairly flat trajectory, and plenty of terminal energy. They came in .308, 7-08, and .243 flavors.....
