Recommend low-medium priced scope for FAL?

I just received and installed a scope base on my Century STG-58 FAL. I got the base from Tapco for about $30, and it seems very well made and fits perfectly. Even though I was surprised to see it was made by Leapers (Chinese), it seems very well machined and high quality. I've heard that screws sometimes strip, which probably explains why Tapco included six extra screws and two extra inside pressure plates.

Now I need to get a scope to mount on it. I don't want to spend a lot, but I don't want a bottom-of-the-line either. Maybe something in the neighborhood of $200. I'm not sure of what power I want. Maybe one of the Russian scopes with the bullet drop compensator for .308. Anyone have recommendations?

By the way, I also got some new British double-magazine pouches (for 20-round FAL/M1A magazines). They look very good for around $4 or so each.

Tapco also makes a nice 3x9 powered rubber armored scope for a reasonable price that would go good with the mount.

When it comes to the purchase of optics there is no such thing as a good deal. You get what you pay for.

Buy the most expensive scope you can afford. I would not pay anything less than $300. for a scope. I am not joking.

Less expensive scopes do not track. In other words when you change your sight adjustments and then decide to go back to your original setting they do not return to the original starting point. If you decide to move the ajustment up 1 inch it may not move at all or it may move more or less than an inch.

In a cheaper scope you get less optical quality which means less coatings on the lens and a lens that is not ground to perfection. What does this mean to you. Simple you will not see difficult to see targets wether on the target range or in the forest.

Take your bargan basement scope in the dimly lit basement and turn on an incadescent light bulb. Slowly move the scope up towards it and then you will see its image wash out on a cheap scope.

Take a look at a roof and look at the outer edge of the field of view and you will see the lines of the roof shingles actually bend in a cheap scope.

My advice is that a person is better off buying an old beat up rifle for less money and spend the money saved on an expensive brand new scope. Lets face it you can always repair the rifle , you can do nothing about the performance of a junk scope.

A really good scope will cost you $500 and up and it is worth every penny of it if you use your gun seriously in competition or in hunting. W.R.
