Recommend ammo for Ruger 10/22RB

I have just ordered a Ruger 10/22RB .22 carbine. Please recommend ammo (brand) for squirrel hunting, target practice, and plinking.

Try a box of everything, especially the cheap stuff at WalMart. Take several targets to the range and fire a whole box of each type. You'll soon find the best. The trick is how expensive they are vs. how accurate. I find that CCI MiniMag is good, but relatively expensive hunting ammo. Cheap Winchester and Remington lead ammo seems to shoot groups about 25% bigger, but hey, it's 50% cheaper! You'll also figure out what jams. My 10/22 will only shoot 38gr HP's or 40gr lead or copper plated. It frequently chokes on the 36gr copper plated economy ammo.

FWIW, I get cost-effective results from mine with the Remington Golden Bullet, which is under $10/550 at Wal-Mart.

Your's may like something else, though.

I've had great success with PMC Moderator (38-gr. HP, subsonic) through my 10/22. You may want to smooth up the action just a bit before you try it because it may not cycle right out of the box.

That baby shoots cloverleafs at 25 yards with that ammo, and it sounds like a BB gun. And you should be able to get it for around $15 for a brick of 500. That ain't the cheap stuff, but it's very good for what you pay for it.

I've also found that Winchester Super-X is very accurate and devestating out of that little rifle.

I had a grand accumulation of brands and velocities and such, of stray .22 stuff lying around. So, testo-testo time.

Of all the stuff I tried, in three-shot groups at 25 yards, I found that the QuikShok was most accurate. For me. In my particular 10/22. Dunno about yours.

I will say that the QuikShok is devastating on squirrels. The exit wound looks more like .22 Mag.

FWIW,

Art

Thanks, Art.

I am unable to locate QuikShok on the Cheaperthandirt site. Who makes it?

Again, many thanks

Do a search for quick shok

Also good are Winchester Power Points and CCI Stingers. Stingers are not to be used in target barrels because of case length. They are a little more expensive, but have lots of energy.

Regards.

Remington has always been my favorite all around 22LR ammo. They have the "gold bullet" packs of 550 for the price of 500 LRN Thunderbolts. I do like the Thunderbolts better myself though.

Thanks, Ledbetter. I ordered Winchester Power Points. 'Never could find anything re Quick Shok at Cheaperthandirt, and a TFL search yielded nothing sufficient to change that fact.

Greetings,

I hope you like the Power Points as much as I do. Also good are dyna-points (Winchester?) available at Kmart for around $10 per brick.

I am looking at a box of "Quik-shok" ammo (note corrected spelling). They are made in USA by Blount for Magnum Performance Ballistics, PO Box 7916, Macon GA 31209. Looks like they are product number QS22HV. Do a new search, lots of people like these for hunting.

Give everything a try, all the types of ammo you can get your hands on, and benchrest test to find the best at different ranges. For example, my 10/22 likes Winchester T-22 at 25 yards, but likes the Power Points much better at 100 yards.

Good luck and shoot safe.

Thanks, Ledbetter. I had not been able to find anything re Quik-Shok. I appreciate your providing the product information.

If you try the Federal(WalMart special), see if you can try 50-100 rounds before you buy a brick. It might be my gun only, but my 10/22 pukes all day on that stuff.(My pistol will feed all day, so its not a huge issue for me).

I haven't done a lot of load research for my 10/22s. I shoot the Wal-Mart bulk ammo. But one thing I have found is that the bulk Remington stuff jams and I have failures to fire. The bulk Federal stuff works great. I have talked to others who had the same experience on Gitz's 10/22 board. This was a surprise to me because I always had good luck with Remington 22 ammo and it was always my preferred brand. For some reason, my 10/22 just doesn't like it.

I have had problems with the Federals just as MiniZ has. I think they have a slightly larger OAL that helps them catch when they should be feeding, although I haven't set one in a micrometer yet.
