Recommend a light weight scope for big game.

I'm putting together a light weight mountain rifle. I've decided on a Ruger American for the rifle. Now I just need the scope and rings. My shots are primarily under 80 yards, but there could be the occasional longer shot. I'll likely go with a .308 since I already have one in an AR10. I also have a Rem. 700 in 30-06. I love these two rounds. I'm thinking about a 2-7. I like the idea of dialing down to 2 since I hunt in thick trees but I'd like the flexibility of going up to 7x. A 1-6x would be good but I want to keep costs down. ($200-$250...possibly used)
I want this scope to be super light and preferably small. Recommend some light weight rings while you're at it.
Thanks in advance.

Leupold scopes as a brand tend to be lighter. A VX-1 in 2-7X32 would be about perfect. A 1-4X20 is even lighter and another option. On 1X they are faster for close fast shots than iron sights and 4X is enough for 300 yard shots.

Redfield is now made by Leupold and for a few dollars less the Revolution 2-7X32 is another option.

I own some VX-1's in 1-4X20 on a couple of AR, and the Revolution is on my American Predator. The Leupold is a slightly better option, but it is hard to argue with almost $50 difference. Not sure the Leupold is $50 better.

This is my Ruger Amercan Predator with the 2-7X32 Revloution along with a 200 yard target. I used Burris Z rings in the factory bases. This rifle is 7 lbs exactly as shown. The 22" barreled version will have a thinner barrel, but weigh about the same since it is 4" longer.

I have bought ~ 25 used Leupolds.
I also have IOR, USO, Sightron, Unertl, Burris, Bushnell, Kahles, Redfield, etc.
.

A vari x- II, VX-II, VX-1, or VX-2 in 2x7 will all work great for shooting deer out to 500 yards. I put a Stoney Point Turret on some of them so I can dial in for the long range

I get half of the used scopes off ebay, the rest off forums and gun shows. Some come on rifles when I buy a used rifle.
