Recomendations on Harris bipods for M1A's

I want to put a bipod on my M1A. I know that Harris offers a slick mount for the M1A. But I need some input on which Harris model bopod to use.

Thanks!

What Mount?

Mike:

I asked a similar question a while back, and couldn't get any info on mounting a Harris to my M1A. Essentially people on several forums indicated I'd have to jerry-rig it.

Where did you get info on the Harris M1A mount, please?

I'd also like to see the feedback in terms of a specific model bipod as well.

harris pod

Years ago I was headed to Idaho for a Mule deer hunt and was told by my buds I had to have a bipod for those 500 yard shots I'd be taking. I bought a Harris 1A2 lightweight and went to mount it on my M1A NM and realized It was'nt gonna happen. I bought a spare bolt through lug for a bolt action rifle and mounted it in front of the M1A's. It goes on and off easily and works great. I can use the one pod for my other rifles. Go For It!!

The Israelis did put harris bipods on their M14's that were turned into snipers. The bipod attaching stud is two inches to the rear of the front swivel. The model number of the bipod attached to my US civilian (M1A) version of the Isareli sniper is 1A2, it is the ultralight bipod they make. It works quite well on this rifle. It is a quick detach type with the mounting stud attached through the lower forestock. Here are a couple of pics....and a link to other pictures of the same weapon.

If you can think of any specifics I may be able to help you with...just let me know.

I can't find what ever it was I was looking at,but I could have sworn I saw a Harris mount for the M1A. I got on the Harris web site and it turned out to be a mount for a mini-14. Massive brain fart. BobR Those are two of the best looking M1A's I've seen! Tell me about the hardware you used to mount the bipod. Tell me about the stocks. I think I need a cold shower!!!

I believe the Harris 2R adapter would be the ticket, it may require some inletting and even a bit of epoxy to make it solid. Just my best guess as I've been trying to come up with the correct hardware for my own project. FWIW

Harris No. 2A Flange Nut

What I used on mine was the Harris No. 2A Flange Nut (the one with the round flange). Had to drill a hole (centered on the area between the front swivel and the existing vent hole beneath the gas piston) and inlet a little wood so the flange would fit flush in the existing stock mortise (where the front swivel attaches). Took maybe 5 minutes, a little epoxy on the flange, 5 years and umpteen thousand rounds later is hasn't budged one iota. Looks factory. I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but yes, it is available from Brownells -- Kernel

Kernel has it right!!

Just one more thing: don't put the mount in front of the front swivel, the stock is too thin there and it WILL crack (happened to me). Also, I like the swivelling 9"/13" bipod best. Be sure that the nut does not touch the gas piston inside.

Synthetic Stock?

I don't mean to sound thick, but the process described involved a wood stock. Any issues or potential pitfalls on a rifle wearing a synthetic stock?

Thanks,

SA Scott

Mike,

I wish I could lay claim to ownership of both of those rifles, it is a publicity shot from when Springfield was selling the Israeli Defense Force rifles here in the US.
Springfield imported M14's that the IDF no longer were using and replaced the Receiver with a semi receiver and put a new NM barrel on them and then sold the day scoped one. I could only afford one:(, so I got the day version one. From the reading I have been able to do, the stock with the night vision setup was a early stock used by the Israelis. Later everything went to the other stock.
The stocks are what the Israelis stocked them with. The heightened comb is held on with two screws that are removed with no problems in case you want to shoot with open sights.
My best 5 round group so far has been just a hair over MOA at 100m (scoped). That was with ammo that was supplied by the Navy to me several years ago whan I shot on a station rifle/pistol team. I think that with some handloads I can shoot sub-MOA as long as I do my part.

There may be a very slim possibility that SA will cough up just a stock. I was at their website and there are no mentions of this rifle anymore.

I think I know where a fiber glass GI stock is. I can get it for about fifteen or twenty bucks. I will try to do it on the military stock to see how it works first before I drill my Springfield stock. I too wonder how that Harris #2A mount will work on a synthetic stock
Thanks for all the input!

I've figured it out. I bought a Harris model #5 mount. I drilled a 5/16 inch hole 2-3/4 inches aft of the front sling swivel. The #5 mount worked like a dream. I chose the Harris BR bi-pod and like it real well. The long thin top side nut assembly gives plenty of support and there was no Dremel work done at all the gas piston clears and everything. The fiber glass stock was at least 1/4 inch thick at the point where I put the mount. Thanks for the help.
