I was just looking for some in put here. I was wanting to get my girlfriends brother a 20 gauge shot gun so he could begin shooting and hunting. He is 10 years old and has a LOP of 11 or 12 inches. He has been shooting those pellet guns for a few years now and i think he deserves something more usefull. I have taught him firearms and hunting saftey and he is very good about watching his surroundings in relation the the muzzle. His family is not very wealthy so i thought i would help him out in an activity that he loves. I was wondering what kind of gun would be appropriate for him. I have looked at the remingtons and I really like the 870 Wingmaster Jr. It has the look of a full size gun but will fit him well. I do not believe in purchasing "cheap" firearms, so please make quality suggestions. Thanks in advance.

20 gauge 870 pump that fits him would be ideal.

you really need to get out there and have him try on shotguns, i'd just report back what fits him and base your decisions on that.

Yeah, i have had him shoot my 11-87 and it was too big for him and the model 1100 LT-20 seemed just a hair big but he is still growing of course. Would it be a bad thing to get him one that is just a hair big? With his age would i be better off to get a synthetic model or a taditional walnut and blue gun? thanks for your help. I have never done the youth firearm thing before as i am only 20 and not ready for kids yet. But he is just as passionate about hunting and shooting as i am so i hate to see him miss out on a great activity.

I am a HUGE 870 fan when it comes to pumps, but the fact is the Mossberg .20ga youth model is going to shave some weight off by virtue of it's aluminum alloy reciever. I have started several small women & kids out bird hunting and they all chose the 'Berg over the Remmy for just that reason. I admit the fit & finish is not as nice as an 870, but this is not a stakeout gun, nor can you impress birds into the bag.

Would a cut-to-fit Ruger Red Label be a viable choice? Or if only for upland game, how 'bout a 28ga? A 28ga red label is petite, and points like a wand.

I would NOT give a beginner an autoloader! It is too easy for them to get too excited and forget there is one in the chamber.

Heresy in these parts, but it is also not a crime to make a kid wait a while till he grows into the gun. I had to wait a few years and make due with a cut down .22.

That said, the express jr from remington is about a 12 lop, this is about 4 inches OAL shorter than an express youth, but the weight is not much difference, I would not use a single barrel from H&R, I find kids have trouble with the hammer and some unfortunate AD's take place with them.
