recoil ?

How comparative is the recoil from a 300 Savage to a 308 ? About the same or is one heavier recoil ?

Out of the same weight gun with identical bullet weights physics says that the .308 will recoil slightly harder due to the greater velocity.

Realistically, you'll never notice the difference.

I have a torn rotor cuff that cannot be repaired because of a complete tear off and retraction. I was only shooting my 223 and then tried my 300 savage and it was good to go, no discomfort. I have been wanting a 308 bolt rifle but wasn't I wasn't sure about the recoil being more than the 300 savage.

Have the same shoulder problems as you, from benchpresses at the gym & work, could never have the time off to fix. I shoot a Rem 700 LTR 308 cal. 20" brl. installed a brake to stay on target. I like shooting the rifle without pain. My kind of shooting is only benchrest for accuracy only, the rifle has weight, that will make the difference in recoil. Hope I helped in some way. Chris

Thanks for the replies, I had no problem shooting a few rounds with my 300 savae 99 so I guess a 308 should be ok also

Have shot both, but from different styles of gun.

.300 Savage was in a friends old Savage model 99 lever gun.
.308 was ex wife's Savage "package" bolt action with synthetic stock.

Since the bolt gun was lighter is seemed to have a harder recoil than the lever.

Again weight had much to do with perceived recoil.

Since it was much lighter the .308 seemed to recoil more that my old Savage with the wood stock in 30-06.

My "new" gun is a Savage model 111 in 7mm Rem mag with synthetic stock, bipod and a decent recoil pad. Depending upon what load i'm shooting out of it recoil can range from pleasantly acceptable to downright painful.

There are a lot of other factors. The Savage 99 is a relatively heavy rifle by modern standards, with no recoil pad. Many modern 308's may be much lighter, but modern high-tech recoil pads help a bunch too. If you plug in the numbers in the link I provided above my 7 1/2 lb 308 has about 25% less recoil than my 7 1/2 lb. 30-06 But from my 6 lb Kimber recoil is exactly the same as the much heavier 30-06.

There are big differences in individual loads too.

As long as you don't go with one of the ultra-light 308's and aren't shooting hot loads in it you probably will never notice the difference. With a modern recoil pad the 308 might well feel like it has less recoil than he 300 Savage from the 99.
