Recoil Spring For Gold Cup?

What is the correct weight recoil spring for my Colt Gold Cup National Match Series 70? I usually shoot hardball loads like 230GR. American Eagle. Is the factory replacement spring good enough or is there a better one?
Sometimes the gun does not go into battery and I have to nudge the slide slightly to close it. Since the spring is the original, I assume that it needs replacement?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike.
I've always heard that the factory recoil springs in all of their full size pistols is 16#. Some of the posters say to change this spring every couple of thousand rounds.
I'd say that if your pistol is clean and has no damage that you could try putting in a new one. They are cheap enough even for ones from a big name supplier.

The stock Gold Cup spring is designed for target loads, even new it's a little weak for hardball. Try an 18 or 18.5.

Original facory spring for the Gold Cup was a 14 lb spring (it was intended for shooting 185g target SWCs). Factory recoil spring for Government Model (intended to shoot ball) was 16 lbs. Commander (the original was the Light Weight) had a 18lb spring.
I have read that the original 16 lb recoil spring was light to reduce the occurance of stove pipes in unskilled shooters hands. If you don't have a good grip a heavier recoil spring will induce the occasional stove pipe.
I always recommend the Wolf 18.5 spring for anyone shooting ball or heavier ammo in a Government Model. If you shoot ball in your Gold Cup go to at least the 16 lb GM spring. The factory spring (14 lbs) is a little too light for Ball.
