Recoil Reducing 1911 Guide rods

I would like to know if anyone would share his experiences with recoil reducing guide rods for 1911A1 (Springfield, Kimber, etc.).

I am looking at brands like Shok-Tec, Harrts, Chandler and Sprinco. Some use the USP-style double-spring system (Sprinco, for example) while others use mercury filled rod to slow the recoil force down.

Do these systems work reliably? Are there any down sides? Which is the "best" brand?

Primarily, I am looking to decrease recoil, reduce muzzle flip and protect the frame from battering.

Are you wanting to put this on a competition gun or a carry gun? What caliber, .45?

I ask because I can see a use for it in competition where every fraction of a second can count for a win. However, I don't think I'd want one on a defensive gun because it's just one more thing to foul up. KISS. While it's true that in a defensive encounter, every fraction of a second counts, that usually comes into play only insofar as getting the gun into action goes. Being able to fire subsequent rounds a few thousandths of a second faster isn't going to be that important if you make the first one or two count anyway.

Harrts seems to give best 'felt' results; very durable.

I agree with WESHOOT2 on his opinion on the Harrts recoil reducer. I have one for my kimber. I shoot it now with a fire dragon fitted comp bushing which works better. The added length is no problem, I don,t carry.
 
Skorz, I like the Harrts for a .45 as it helps reduce muzzle flip, but does nothing to reduce felt recoil. I am a big believer in Sprinco also for 9mm. It spreads the recoil impluse out over a longer period giving the illusion of reducing recoil. I also like the Sprinco on alloy frame guns. Check with our friend Don OTMW, I sold him a Harrts for his Commander.
