Recoil pad trimming

Hi all - I just had a new recoild pad installed on my ole' Remington Model 11 and want to trim it up a bit. I've tried this before on other pads and got a rough edge. What's the trick to getting that smooth edge?

Thanks!

Recoil pads are usually ground down with a sanding wheel or belt. That is what gives it the even look on the side. I don't think you will ever be able to get it looking OK with trimming it yourself.

'Lo Noban ,

While Intel6 is right about it being easier to use a belt or disc sander , if you have the patience , you can get the pad down with a small block of wood wrapped with sand paper . Kickeeez
pads seem to take the most patience ; if it's already close to what you want use a fine grade , 120 grit or higher .

Some people say that when you get really close that a wet/dry
paper with a bit of water is the best way to finish ; but , I haven't had to do that with mine .

If you don't mind spending a few $ then, the rubber auto body
type "holder" works pretty good and is easy to get the paper on and off and is somewhat easier on the hands .

If you have to work with the pad on the stock , mask the stock with something - - -anything is better than nothing - and work
perpendicular , more or less , to the axis of the barrel .

Just don't rush it , Hawkaaa53

Guys - I took your advice, skipped out of work early :p , and took to the recoil pad with 120 then 220 grit wet/dry paper. Everything turned out perfectly and I thank you both for the advice.
