Recoil pad for a 590A1

Hey folks, restrictions at my local indoor range have forced me to switch to all-slug shooting as the weather has gotten colder. These things CHEW up my shoulder - feels like a session of weightlifting when I'm done :)

Looking for a good recoil pad for my 590A1. I've heard good things about Pachmeyer (sp?) but as far as I know they don't make a pad especially for this model shotgun.

What, if anything would you folks recommend?

The Pachmyer Decellerator pad is one I truly like, tho I do OK with the standard Rem pads. Over on trapshooters.com, the folks say nice things about the Kick Eez and the Gooey pads, but I've no personal experience with them.

A couple other things you can do to cut the kick on that 590 include adding weight, and using the 1 oz slugs instead of the heavier ones.

Also, a wearable pad like the PAST do a lot to help take the sting out of slugging.

Check the Cabela's catalog for the Pachmayr "pre fit" Decelorator (sp?) pads. I have these on my 870's and they work great. They are also more durable than the Kick-ez pads.
I am working on refinishing a set of police stocks and I have found that the pre-fit Decelorator's can be fit to the stock with a benchgrinder or better yet a shaper-table with one of those cylinder-shaped sanders. A fine file cleans up the hard plastic portion nicely.

I had a similar problem with my 590A1

Dave McC suggested shaving off the pointy bottom of the factory recoil pad, which was punching me on the shoulder bone when I fired. That helped a lot.

I also got a Past wearable shoulder pad, and now I hardly feel a thing;)

Good luck.

This is what I've been looking for, but unfortunately Pachmayr doesn't make a "pre fit" pad for the 590A1. Their website has a bunch of "generic" offerings that can be trimmed; I was wondering which one might be the best choice for this weapon.

Led, that mod works best for females and bbl chested men.

Interlude, the big trap pad works very well, tho the Old English variant is effective also. For a "Serious" shotgun, I'd want one that sticks to the shoulder. The trap pad does this nicely.

For a little more kick reduction, stick the pad on and don't trim it.The extra surface area spreads the recoil.

It'll look odd, but esthetics aren't the reason people buy 590s.

"......esthetics aren't the reason people buy 590s."

Ha! You're so right Dave. That's why they buy 870's!

Does anyone have a answer to "Interlude's" question?

I also have a 590A1, and would like to know which model of the Pachmayr Decelerator to buy.

They have one that fits the 500! Will that work on a 590A1?

The trap pad, and the prefits don't. Some come close, but there's enough variation stock to stock that it's not like a fitted pad.

Maybe the ones for synthetic stocks are better.

Fitting a pad isn't rocket science. If you can work a belt sander and have a little patience, no prob. Just go slow...

The 590 seems to be one of the few shotguns to benefit from porting. The jump on recoil is most abrupt and unpleasant, not sure why...

I put a Kick-Ezz sorbothane pad on my Rem870 - it was way big but a disk sander bit on my drill took it down in 20-30 minutes work. It helped noticably, but the Past recoil pad let me shoot a few dozen slugs with no shoulder soreness the next day.
