Recoil pad finish

Blindstitch

I have a Mossberg 500 and it has been upright for 13 years. I think the butt sitting on the sill of the gun cabinet caused the bottom point on the recoil pad to dry and develop a two deep cracks.

So today I took a dremel and reshaped it to a more rounded design and followed up with sand paper to get a desired shape. Now that the shape is fine the worked area looks like a used eraser and the rest has a shinny finish on it.

Is there something I can put on it to blend the finish.

After sanding it with 400 grit sand paper it didn't make much of a difference so I coated it with a thin layer of clear enamel applied with a sponge. Looks a lot better.

If anyone knows of a 1/2 inch thick recoil pad worth while and not a million dollars either bolt on or sand to fit I would appreciate it. The current pad is almost an inch thick and a 1/2 inch pad would make winter pheasant hunting a lot easier.

Why no get a new 1" pad and cut the stock a half a inch and fit the new pad? I do one a week in my shop and its a snap if you have the right tool.

Try pure glycerin for restoring rubber items. I have been using it to bring rubber motorcycle parts back from the dead for years. Some parts are just not to be found and glycerin has been a lifesaver. It can be had at your local pharmacy very cheap.
