Does anyone know where there is any info, tables or charts that can accurately detail the foot pounds of energy, in recoil, of different calibers, bullet weights and rifle types of most factory products?
Thanks in advance,
Jim Hall
It's likely much more applicable to solid-breech rifles and shotguns than to handguns, since they tend to jump a bit more than rifles, reducing the "felt" effect. Semi-autos also tend to spread out the time of recoil, reducing the effect. It's for smokeless powder only. Follow the prompts for bullet weight, velocity, and weapon weight. There's a component of powder weight that you'll have to get from reloading manuals. I use 58 grains for .270-length cases and 45 grains for .308-length cases, if I don't know the real values. (The powder weight is necessary, since it has mass and exits the barrel.) It's based upon the formula printed in The American Rifleman 20 years ago, but physics hasn't changed much since then. Velocity of the bullet does make a difference, and in my experience many factory-published tend to be a bit high.
I have a Windows-based program that is better looking, but gives the same results - except there's a black powder capability. It's much bigger and takes longer to download.
