Recoil comparison

Hey guys. I might be in the market for a new handgun soon and since I already have both my CZ´s in 9mm, I´ll probably consider a 40S&W.

I´ve read from several sources and seen a few videos about Hornady´s Critical Denfense ammunition for being a mild recoil, light for caliber, self defense round with some realy interesting terminal performance. Particularlly in the 40S&W platform.

I´ll like to hear from people who actually have shot and tested the CD in 40S&W if felt recoil could be compared in any way to that on a 9mm 147+p or something alike. Sorry I don´t know anyone near with a 40 cal gun, so let´s see what can we collect from the forum.

Not to be mean or anything, but I´m only interested in the opinion of those who have actually fired Hornady´s particular load.

Thank you all and good shooting.

To start, I have not shot that exact load in that caliber, so feel free to ignore my reply, ill understand ;)

I have shot allot of 165gr Gold Dots, which are the same bullet weight and the same muzzle velocity as the CD, so felt recoil should be the same. I do find them to be very controllable and accurate. To my hand the recoil is a little bit easier than FMJ range ammo, but only by a little bit.

I have shot my Glock 23 back to back with my friends Glock 17, and the difference in caliber was always noticeable. But if your used to shooting 147gr 9mm +P ammo, the jump to .40 will be an easy move, it's not much more kick.

You have to look at the velocity for any specific bullet weight. It's been said that it's hard to find a poor 40S&W load EXCEPT 'reduced velocity' ones .Otherwise with normal velocity loads the various bullet weights are excellent performers for self defense. It's a great cartridge.

Critical Defense may have mild recoil but it also is lacking in penetration, if I may, I would suggest buying some better self defense ammo like Speer Gold Dot or Federal HST
