Rechambering Ruger No1 375 H&H to 375 RUM

Is this possible? from the research I've done in terms of comparing case sizes and what not it should be able to be done but thought I'd ask you knowledgeable bunch.

It should be the 375 RUM is bigger every way but caliber. The case head of the RUM is only .002 bigger than H&H.

I'm no expert but I did stay at a XXXXXXX place once.

Belt diameter on a H&H is .532, head diameter on a RUM is .550 difference of .018

Length of both is 2.850 w/o bullet.

Shoulder on the H&H begins at 2.412 and the round is .448 at that point angle is 15 degrees and the shoulder ends at 2.550.
Shoulder on the RUM begins at 2.3873 and is .530 at that point angle is 30 degrees and the shoulder ends at 2.4912.

The issue is where the shoulder begins and ends. You need a reputable gun smith to look at the overall chamber space available since the barrel must come off and be turned and threaded to set it back a bit before rechambering. There must be enough meat left to handle the 65K psi of the RUM safely. A #1 shouldn't pose an issue but I would consult an expert licensed smith.

Yes the .375 RUM chamber can be done but you would probably want to set the barrel back and rechamber. The two critical areas you have to clean up are the shoulder and the belt the RUM will clean up the belt easily. Where they differ is where the shoulder ends as pointed out above with the H&H ending slightly forward of the RUM. So to re-chamber the rifle properly you would want to set it back and re-cut the chamber. Not a big deal for most competent gunsmiths.

Qestions to ask yourself before you do this is what will the RUM do for me that the H&H will not? The .375 RUM is going to produce more recoil, besides the chamber will I need to add a break or Mercury device to reduce recoil? Is your action going to require work to make the new cartridge feed?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll look into it further with a gunsmith.

Tayloforce I do see your point and to be honest if it was only about doing the job the H&H would be fine it's more of a do it because I can kinda thing and for something a little different.

The nice thing about the Ruger #1 is you won't need to mod the action.

Definitely consider having recoil reduction added in during your work if you chose to do it. I can tell you first hand what full throttle 300 gr. loads feel like from a 1st gen REM 700 Alaskan Wilderness Rifle. Even with a Kevlar Stock and a thick recoil pad that rifle has a SERIOUS  kick. It weighs in at 8.25 lb.s with the scope....weight is your friend with these thumpers.

Man I totally missed the rifle being a No 1! No action work needed to make it work in York rifle. Though it might be cheaper to buy a M700 already chambered for the RUM they usually go pretty cheap used.

.375 RUM

Well i've been doing my homework regarding this rechambering and it is going ahead. Although as 300 Weatherby suggested i'm going with the 375 Ackley improve 375 RUM ackley improved that is :) The cost was no greater and I get something even more unique. Once it's finished i'll be sure to give a range report and enclose photos of my bruised shoulder.

SHR970 what sort of recoil reduction would you suggest? Do you mean one of those that is fitted internally to the stock? I don't know all that much about those have you had any experience with them?
