"RECALL" On S&W Model 624 ????

Yes,

Some of the cylinders were not heat treated properly.
Smith replaced the ones that were sent in.
It is my understanding that they have no more cylinders left in stock, at this time.

S&W really botched this one. My understanding is that if the gun was sent back, checked and/or repaired, S&W stamped a little red inked seal on the box. This was insanely STUPID as more often than not these guns change hands without the box when sold used. A smart person would have stamped the gun in some fashion. I have a 624 that I picked up used, very nearly LNIB. The box has the red stamp on it, but I still sent an e-mail to S&W about it. They replied that I shouldn't have any trouble with it and not to worry. They also mentioned that they do not have any cylinders left as already mentioned above. This was a couple of months ago. There was a post over on www.smith-wessonforum.com where a 624 owner sent his gun in recently for repair. S&W determined that the cylinder needed to be replaced, but didn't have the parts. Instead they offered the guy a new 629! Nice. The guy complained, of course, that he wanted a .44 special and if he wanted a .44 mag, he would buy one. You can look around over at the S&W forum and probably find a multitude of posts about the matter including details on how to identify ones that have already been back. The search function doesn't work for the revolver forum (at least it didn't last time I checked) so you have to go through the pages of threads thread by thread. I really wished they'd fix the software over there, that forum is an incredible resource.

If you call with the serial number they can tell you if it's in the range of the problem guns and if that particular one has been checked. There is no marking or stamping on the gun itself to show if it's been checked or not, just the box (if that was sent back).

BTW.... The S&W forum has just been updated and I think all the functions work now.

Part of the software problem was fixed over at S&W forum. The search function now works for the most recent posts in the revolver forum. Nothing else shows. Still, they say in the "lounge" area they're still working, maybe they still have to "migrate" the older posts into the updated software. The revolver forum is the most active form over there and some really knowledgeable people post over there. Can't wait until they're finished. Majic's right, call S&W and see what they say. I can't imagine them not having a record of guns that have been checked. It may have been considerably more difficult to pin this thing down to specific production ranges and say this gun was affected while this other one was not.

Hello:
Thank's for all the replies on the recall. Itook a picture of the end of the box. Is this the red stamp you guy's are speaking of ? If not I will call them tomorow. Regards, Hammer It.

Here's a quote from that forum:

I talked to Kate Fredette ( 1-800-331-0852 Ext. 218 ) from Smith & Wesson Customer Support in regard to the Model 624 recall. She said that the problem is that the ones produced between Jan. to June of 1985. The company that supplied the cylinder steel did not meet S & W's specs. They have to magnaflux the cylinder to check if they are ok. So far they have only found one bad. She requests that if anyone calls her that they have the serial number and leave it with her voice mail. Then when she returns the call she will have looked up the date of production and be able to provide the information to the caller right away.

AND

The serial/model tag on the box has a red 3/4" circle with a "C" in it.

My own gun was made in 1986 (I just looked it up), but the previous owner sent it back anyway.

Poor response time ????

I called S&W as advised and left my name and number twice with Kate. I never heard back from her yesterday at all !! I realize she may have been busy but it is rude to not return a call whan asked in a polite way. I also never got a person only voice mail on several tries... Guess that is there way of taking care of the customer?? I did however find out that S&W did indeed mark the repaired and or checked gun's.If the gun has been inspected by them it will have a large "F" stamped on the face of the cylinder toward's the recoil shield. Thank's for all that replied and I did get to the range with it and it is the tightest shooting S&W revolver that I have next to my model 17 K-22. :p Regards, Hammer It.

Whew!

Checked mine. It has the circled "C" on the box and the "F" on the rear face of the cylinder, so I guess I'm golden.

Well, checked mine again and it does have that stamped "F" on the cylinder face. It's not exactly an F though. It seems like it is an over stamp of something else. Maybe some kind of double stamp.

Let us know if they do call you back. Could be she's on vacation or out for a family emergency with nobody to check vm.
