Has anybody shot one of these pistols or have any information on them? url? They were reviewed in almost every gun mag favorably (but then, how many guns aren't) and were being advertised heavily. I am in the middle of moving and cannot put my hands on any of my info. Thanks

jnsn, I have one of these little autos. I've had many failures to feed when new, even w/ ball. Finally after 400 - 500 rounds through it it feeds reliably. We use the 230gr Hydra-Shok in it with no problems. A buddy has one too, anf both of us had to drift the rear sight to the left I believe ( damn ccan't remembers sh**). It makes a good pocket pistol after you get it broke in and get the sights the way you want them.

jnsn:

I have a P-45 and really like it. I have fired about 300 rounds through it with no problems using American Eagle (Federal) 230 gr. FMJ and Federal 185(?) and 230 gr. JHP Hydroshok. It is very compact, accurate for self defense ranges, fits my hand well (much better than the Glocks), and looks a lot nicer than a Glock (to me :)). I got the one with the black melonite coating which I would recommend. The slide is still stainless but with a black finish.

I think it's a great pistol. The only drawbacks are the heavy trigger pull, 6+1 capacity, no lock open feature, and just OK sights. But, my thinking here is:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>for a DAO pistol with no safety, you need a heavier trigger pull (the Glock pull is too light for my likes),
<LI>in a self defense situation, you're not going to notice the heavy trigger pull,
<LI>if you're in a situation where 7 rounds of .45 ACP is not enough, then you're probably in it pretty deep (and should have brought the shotgun too ;)),
<LI>nothing's perfect (not even Glocks) and this costs a LOT less than most.
</UL>

For $225, I don't think you can beat it.

Republic Arms website is at http://www.republicarmsinc.com/index.htm . They have reprints of several gun magazine tests there. There is also a short article in Gun Digest 2000 (check your local library if you don't have a copy).

PS: I recall hearing or reading somewhere that 1911 magazines will fit this gun (but stick out some). They look the same (except for length), but I have never tried it.

PPS: The people at Republic Arms are really nice too. I talked to one of the engineers there for about 30 minutes one day before I bought it.

Pilgrim, a friend of mine has one too (he's the reason I got mine). He said he tried using the 1911 mags and they didn't function well in his. If I remember right (that'll be the day ;)), it was a failure to feed type of thing. I haven't tried it yet, but imagine I will soon. I'll let you know what my results are. FWIW...YMMV

Longhair:

You have memory problems too?

I think those Yankees must be puttin' something in our grits ;) ... or maybe it's our wives :(. I'll have to watch when she makes 'em tomorrow morning and let you know.

Just 'cause I'm paranoid doesn't mean nobody's out to get me :o.

BTW, what does YMMV stand for?

I worked my way up through these loads in a Patriot, and got a flinch from the little 20 ounce gun. I built a 42 pound triple recoil spring setup on a homemade guide rod and the flinch went away. I had to double up on the mag springs to keep up with the recoil springs. That reduced the number of rounds it would hold by one. You must be strong to cycle it, strong to load the mag, and strong to survive the recoil. It still makes me shake, and I have shot full house 44 mag for years without flinch or shakes.

The chamber support is very good. I used Federal brass. Don't try this at home.

That project took a long time, with the Patriot group cheering me on. It is really the only thing I did with my life then. Now I have a job, but I do have another trick for the gun planned. I have recieved about 20 shipments from J&L Industrial supply and I bought a metal lathe. Republic Arms has been very supportive with free parts, discount parts, and design history. They are getting free engineering from me. There are only 6 people at Republic Arms and they are way too busy right now.
