Rebluing a Colt Detective Special - Any Recommendations?

Do you have any recommendations for rebluing a Colt Detective Special? I'm not sure which issue it is but it's one of the later ones, 1970's-ish with the shrouded ejector. It was a carry piece which has been sitting in a holster for years and the bluing was rusted off the cylinder. The good news is I believe it's all that was seriously rusted, the bad news is it was rusted so bad it took off all the bluing when it was wiped down.

I don't believe there is a lot of collector interest, so the decrease in "value" shouldn't matter.

Give Barlow's Custom Guns a call(local, in SLC). He does really nice work-although his turnaround time is slow.

Good thought, thanks for the tip, and good to see you on the board! I knew the value wasn't an issue, it just looks so hideous with that streak of rust/bare metal that it needs to get redone. I hope I can keep it to the cylinder and not the whole revolver.

Maybe if I get it done soon I'll be able to have it for the next shoot!

Before you have it professionally reblued, you might try that Blue Wonder stuff. It works pretty well as long as you follow the directions to a tee. I found that if you clean the area to be blued very well and degrease it completely, then heat it with a hair dryer at close range before applying the bluing, the results are quite good. Following the bluing application, you have to use the supplied post-blue fixing solution. Once complete, oil it up and you're done.

If the results don't measure up, have the whole piece professionally hot blued. Let us know how it works out. I'd be interested to see photos of the Blue Wonder job when it's complete.

I don't have their web site right here, but just type "Blue Wonder gun blue" on Google and I'm sure you'll get a hit.

I can't tell you where to send it, but can assure you you'll be disappointed if you send it to Checkmate Custom in Florida.

Ditto, we stopped using them (and Fords) as our chromers...
