Rebarreling to 7.62x39

I did some feed and chambering tests on one of my Turk38's and found that it will actually reliably feed the smaller 7.62x39 ... now I'm stuck with the problem of finding a barrel. I was looking through the archives here and it seems that many a gun has been commercially produced in 7.62x39 with a .308" bore ... seems odd at first but it is pretty much an established fact and there don't seem to be any corporately sponsored warnings about shooting the abundant import ammo with .310" projectiles. Seems as though they are using a gunpowder powered swaging die :rolleyes:

Has anyone (re)barreled a 7.62x39 by reaming the chamber in a .308" barrel blank? I was thinking that I might be able to go the Rem700 take-off barrel route if this were a reasonable approach. I'm still investigating, but would appreciate any experiences here.

7.62X39 BARREL

You could use a .303. British barrel off an Enfield, they are .311 or you could try GUN PARTS CORP [NUMRICH ] they used to have listed a complete conversion kit for Mausers.
 
I saw the Numrich conversion ... that has a .308" bore, which prompted my question. I thought about the 303 as well as the Mosin-Nagant's in 7.62x54R ... but I haven't found a source for either of the barrels. Any hints there?

How about a tapered throat?

Ala' the Ruger Mini-30 and Ruger Model 77 chambered in 7.62x39? They start out at .311-.312 at the chamber end, and wind up at .308 when the bullet leaves the muzzle. Freebore's nothing new, Roy Weatherby kept his pressures sane on the super Weatherby Magnums that way. I've been thinking of a shorty Turk chambered for the 7.62x39, too, using either the Brownell's or Numrich Large Ring barrels, threaded down to the Turkish 98's small shank and freebored a smidgen.
