Rebarrel S&W M28, second try.

I tried to pull up the previuos post with no luck. Must be lost in cyberland.

I have a S&W M28 with a 6in barrel. I want to cut the barrel down to 5in to be IDPA legal. This would include reattaching the front sight, recrown barrel, and refinish.

Would it be better to try and find a 5in tube or 4in tube and rebarrel or have the 6in cut?

I think no one has answered because no one really can. The choice is yours. Any competent pistol smith can cut the barrel and reinstall a front sight. However, if you can find a barrel of the length you want, it is a lot easier to rebarrel than to cut. You might give S&W a holler on their web site or by snail mail and find if they have any barrels that length or if they will cut yours. They will do it right.

George, how about e-mailing me. I tried to e-mail to you but got the following message:

I would like to pursue changeing the barrel on the M28. Brownells list a 5in barrel assy for a Mod 27-3. As both are N frames and the same caliber should work.

Email the cost of doing the work, replacing the barrel, some tune up work, and refinishing. Prefer the bright blue the 27's came with.
