rebarrel or rechamber? OK, where to get a new bbl put on?

I've an old .22-250 that's had (quite likely) 10-20 thousand rounds through it.

From all I've heard/read, the lead can start to go with as few as 1K. Pretty amazing the thing still shoots as well as it does.

This rifle will frustrate me to death, as with the same load, I've put 3 into .150" & the next group will be 1/2" (sometimes a bit more).

Now before I hear the whining about "you're bitchin' about a 1/2" rifle!?" this is my "fun gun" for playing with very accurate loads. Can't tell when I've got that one magic loading when even my "special delux" doesn't group consistantly.

I would like to get this thing back where it belongs. So,

New barrel, as I highly suspect? Don't think that the bbl could be set back enough to do me any real good & 'sides, I'd still be left with the old rifling, etc.

Guess first step would be to have a 'smith take a look with a bore scope & take it from there.

In the ecvent I stick on another, what am I looking at re $s for a Douglas, Hart Shilen, mounted by a good 'smith?

Next is who? & are they stacked up re lead time/waiting list?

Thanks as always.

Can't really recommend anyone in your part of the country, but if you want to send it off, there's two recommendations at the bottom of this.
As to barrels, any you mentioned are great.
For speed of turn around you might want to consider a Shilen short chambered tube. All your builder of choice has to do is fit it to your action, and headspace it by finish reaming the last 0.020" of the chamber.
A job like this with barrel is somewhere around $400.00. Go with a a complete action trueing, blank barrel, fit, chamber, gage and you're going to be in the $650-$800.00 range. The wait will be longer also. Another factor about lead time is that any good builder attracts a crowd, so you get to wait up to 6 months for your masterpiece.

A smith to do your short chambered barrel
is Goerge Bunt, Uncle Georges in GlenRose, Texas. no www, but 254-897-3663. He did a short chambered barrel for me, shoots high 0.1's average for 5 at 100. A bad group is in the very high 0.2's. Give him a call, tell him Mike in Granbury said hello.

Good luck.

ps; consider a fast twist to shoot 69, 77, and 80 grain loads. I use mine with 80 grain Sierras to compete in 1000 yard F class.
Hold 1 MOA at that range. Not real bad for a reworked Remington.

I've got a # for the smith who does my barrels if you want to talk to him.
He did two Douglas premium XX airguaged barrels for me last winter. One .300 winmag and one DCM AR barrel. The stainless one he did in Black-T. No complaints. He has an ad in the smith section of SGN. He was within driving distance so I checked him out first. A retired B&W machinist who works out of his home. Prices are reasonable.
