Reassembling Mosin Rear Sight

Mosin-Marauder

I was being Stoopid again today, and disasembled my rear sight, by accident. I got it back on the rifle, but the actual tangent part I cannot get back on, as the leaf spring is extremely difficult to depress. Is there an easy way to depress it and get the sight back on? Thanks for your help.

Mine was hard to do. If you have a C-clamp, it should be pretty easy, but it was near impossible with a Kant Twist clamp. I ended up having to have a second person squeeze it in very tightly while I punched the pin back in.

Your grandpa's a machinist IIRC. He should have a clamp that would work. I've heard you can use a drill press as a makeshift press for operations like this also, but it seems like that would be a little overkill.

I actually found a post online about using something like a tourniquet totigthen it down. I tried it with 550 paracord and a piece of round stock and it worked! The round stock and the paracord held it in place and gave me time to punch it back in, so all is well now. And the C-Clamp Idea never dawned on me. I should have just went to the shop and got one or two. Thanks for your help!

LOL this excuse stopped working when I was 10.

You accidentally... expertly... took the entire rear sight off of that rifle.

(paraphrased from movie. Ten Points if you guess it!)

lol I had a hard time believing that too. You accidentally removed the entire rear sight block which is brazed/soldered/staked onto an 11mm dovetail on top of the rifle.

Unless he just meant the rear leaf and spring. That I can see doing. I've been there

Glad you got it figured out. You essentially just made a makeshift clamp of a different design. Nothing wrong with that if it works.
