Rear sight on Rossi Ranch Hand

Has anyone put the "flat top rear sight" on their Rossi Ranch Hand? If so, how well does it improve accuracy? Would you recommend it?

Unless you are a little person that is. Then you could put a pad on it and use it as a rifle.

yeah i know they are made to fire from the hip, however I can shoot mine like a handgun or like a rifle ( without it on my shoulder though), however it shoots high and I heard that the low rear sight from Stevegunz help, I just want to know has anyone tried this?

It can be as accurate as many other handguns, in aimed fire.
No rule anywhere says it was "made" to fire from the hip.
I went the other direction & removed the sights completely. :)

I disagree, Chess.
My Chiappa ML can hit my small steel buffalo at 75 yards in freestanding aimed fire.
It's perfectly capable of good accuracy for shooting at things you want to hit, and not just dinking around at ten feet from the hip. :)
It's a poor choice for hunting or self-defense, but I wouldn't want it if it came without sights & I couldn't hit anything with it.
It's mostly a nostalgia piece for me, but still....

The Rossi, before the sights were removed, was as accurate in aimed fire during bench testing as many conventional handguns.
The sights & other alterations were done to the gun because I wanted that one to be more authentic to the original TV guns, which it is.
Even without sights, by carefully lining up the receiver bridge with the rear barrel band & adjusting for it shooting high, I can still hit the buff past 25 yards. It's a slow & imprecise process, but it can be done.

Sorry, but MARE'S LEGS are not made to particularly be fired from the hip. They are made to be fired with one or two hands while aiming down the sights like you would shoot any other handgun. People may fire them from the hip on occasion for fun, but people do that with nearly all guns so that is not a very good argument. People also target shoot while firing from the hip, so that is a bad argument from that perspective as well.

Wanted Dead or Alive is also not a very good example for this point. If you watch the show closely (and I have, I own the whole series) you will notice that virtually everyone on that show shoots from the hip or otherwise shoots without looking down the sights, including with RIFLES. So does that mean all rifles and revolvers are not target guns and are meant to be shot from the hip?

The annoying thing is that I just had a similar discussion on another forum regarding pistol-grip shotguns. Apparently people only believe what they see in movies.

Oh, and BTW, a HOG'S LEG is a big caliber revolver with a long barrel, like Dirty Harry's S&W 29, not a short barreled and short stocked lever action.

As to the OP's question. I don't have a good answer, haven't tried that item.

I will tell you what I have done though... I have put a ghost ring rear sight and large brass bead front sight from Steve's Gunz on my Ranch Hand. Sadly I have not had time to actually try them out yet, but I think it will work great for my purpose. I don't know yet if it helps with the gun shooting high at shorter ranges, but I don't really care as I can deal with that.

My goal with the sight setup on this gun is to be able to go from walking along casually to firing accurately at medium sized game 25-75 yards away in 2 to 3 seconds. Thus the ghost ring sight and brass bead, which should do the job quite nicely at that range, and I should be able to hit at 100 yards if I really need to. Also, if I actually expect to need to shoot at targets further away than 75 yards then I have a 16" R92 with a fully adjustable rear sight and small brass bead front sight that should do the job nicely on anything out to 150 yards.

Sights on Ranch Hand

My 44 mag Ranch Hand shot high with no adjustment left. I installed a Williams Guide 3/16" high rear sight and a front sight from a Winchester Trapper. I had to peen the bottom of the dovetails with a center punch to make the sights fit tight, and peened the top edge of the dovetails down slightly with a drift. They work very well. The Williams rear sight is also adjustable for windage.
