Really stupid question.

Ok. I have a really stupid question that I'm 99% sure I know the answer to. My brother in law is starting to want to get a handgun. I've been around guns for most my life a licensed by Indiana for the last 12 years to carry a handgun. He was telling me tonite his boss has a pistol that only the person wearing a specific bracelet can fire. A smart gun in other words. I pretty much called bs but have heard rumors certain states trying to require this. Is he full of crap?

I remember reading about this type of tech about 10 years ago. Wasn't aware that it ever went into production.

Colt has one in the development stage. It uses a ring, I believe, that the shooter wears, which matches up to the pistol. I think that part of the problem with the setup, is the total reliability of the rig. You have to cram batteries, sensors, transmitters, and receivers into the setup.

There has been at least one company which modified handguns so that only a person wearing a special magnetic ring could fire them.

There have also been some prototype "smart guns" that were supposed to work like the gun your friend's boss described, but I'm not aware of any actual production firearms, or even any custom houses making guns, that work like that.

I kinda got the feeling it was something he possibly seen in a movie. But also during the Clinton period this idea being tossed around. My bro in law didn't have any details on it either.

The Magna-Trigger system existed back in the late '70's. The use would wear a plain ring with a magnet glued on. Your revolver would be modified with a piece of its frontstrap removed, and the magna trigger device installed.

Those "smart guns" are one of the gun control advocates' worst ideas in my opinion. So much for an officer out of ammo using a downed comrade's weapon, or a spouse using the other spouse's weapon if need be.

Oh, and when it comes to guns, there is no such thing as a stupid question, only the one you don't ask. :)

It is something that has and is being looked at by gun manufacturers and the military. But know one has came up with a workable design.
A lot of police and civilians have being shoot with there own guns so you can see the attraction.

If someone could come up with a workable design they would make a fortune.

Any ideas. ? I think he is as you say full of crap

why not ask him to ask his boss to go shooting with both of you and just see what in the world the guy has... or if he is all B.S.

RIngs were available for a whIle (and may still be).

They prevented operation by anyone not wearing the ring on their trigger finger (IIRC).

Bracelets have been 'in development' for a while.

As soon as a big city police department mandates them the technology is probably judged reliable.

Do not hold your breath.

I personally would opt against this technology for the reason mentioned already. I would hate to have my wife need to use my gun and not be able to. Or like many of us with multiple guns have on the wrong ring or bracelet. Lol. I got the feeling that his boss told him a story or seen it in a movie because he asked me about it like it really existed and up till now he has been pretty much against guns until a recent breakout of gang activity around where we live. And just as a side note and to give everyone a chuckle one of the gangs is called the zombies. Kinda makes me glad I prepared for the zombies a year ago by stocking up ammo. Lol.

gang activity in Princeton? Jeez, I used to live in Evansville and spent a lot of time in the Jasper/Winslow area, I couldn't even imagine that. How times have changed.

Well it is in Evansville. Mostly the southern part of the city. Almost nightly events of shots fired and robberies. Also spilling over to other parts as car jackings.
