Really Hornady!?

Bought a series 2 .45 acp die and the expander has nothing in it!!! So much for getting the 45 loads going today. Think I'll get something good out of this disappointment?

the expander has nothing in it!!!

I was sorting and separating with a plan to organize, I came across a few sets of dies I had not seen for years. The dies by design? allowed the primer punch/sizing plug assemble to be installed into the seating die and the seating plug could be screwed into the sizing die. I would say 'problem', the stamp on the die was on top and covered by the locking nut.

Point? I have never purchased a set of dies like RCBS that came in parts and pieces, but, it would not hurt to flatten all the packing and check to make sure the expander is not laying on a bench or trash can.

Hornady is kind of falling apart at the seams, right? Over the past 2 years, I have purchased 2 hornady items (through cabelas). The Cam-lock trimmer and the cam-lock bullet puller. Both items seem well made and robust, until you use them and find that the important parts are all made of pot metal.

I have broken 2 handles on the trimmer, and the 3rd one is bent already. It's the only part on the device made of soft aluminum... it should be steel like the rest of the unit.

The cam-lock bullet puller handle and linkage is so flim-flam that the rivet wore through the handle within 100 rounds. (you may be saying, "jeez Matt... why are you pulling so many bullets?" See my thread about the case of cartridges given to me that were full of corn starch).

Either way, I always though Hornady was a brand you could count on for quality... the brand the pros use. I'm less than impressed.

Look everywhere it was and nothing this thing looks like it was just machined out for the expander and then never touched again and but it the box. I really thought they had somewhat of the gold standard..... We will see how they resolve this one. Spent about $650 in equipment with that company Thursday only to get off work Friday night set it all up, and get stopped dead in my tracks by this.

you may be saying, "jeez Matt... why are you pulling so many bullets?"

No, not me, you do not owe me an explanation. I called Hornady, I explained I was going to be pulling down loaded ammo, lots of loaded ammo. My plan was to save the powder and bullets and get rid of the corrosive primers and Berdan cases. I spent more time waiting for parts than I did using it. The third call was more than they could deal with, that was when they informed me I made too many mistakes. So I went to see them, I reminded them they recommended the cam lock etc., etc.. It was about that time they informed me they were having trouble with a heat treating contractor. I ask them if they wanted me to go by and talk to them. They mailed the part, I found a RCBS collet puller.

I do not really know what to think about Hornaday at the moment. I bought a considerable amount of their "steel match" .308 ammo. The stuff would not reliably fire in any of my bolt action rifles. Keep in mind that NOWHERE on the box does it say ANYTHING about being for Semi auto only. I called customer service and told them that the ammo would not reliably fire. The person I talked with informed me that it would reliably fire. We argued a bit and I told him my two bolt action rifles would not reliably fire it. I then told him the ammo had hard primers. He then went on a spill about the primers were "to spec." I asked him "What spec?" He said, the same spec as any of our other ammo. I got annoyed with him and eventually hung up on him. I called back and spoke with another person who told me send in the unfired ammo and the fired cases. I asked if he wanted the ammo that had primers struck by the firing pin but did not fire. He said yes, especially those. A couple weeks later I get a call from customer service. They informed me that they were replacing the ammo with 168 brass cased national match ammo free of charge. I asked him what was wrong with the ammo. He said nothing was wrong with the ammo, it had mil spec hard primers and would not reliably shoot in a bolt action. I told him, "if the first xxxxxx I had talked to had told me that I would have shot it in my AR-10 and you would not have had to swap it." He apologized for their lack of information provided about the ammo and the lack of knowledge of some of their customer service people. So the moral of the story is, when dealing with Hornaday, hang up on people until you get someone with some sense.

Nice. Yea I figured the woman I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about. Kept asking me what broke and how it happened I had to tell her multiple times that it wasn't broke. There was just nothing in it. I posted a new thread with a photo bucket link and with my experience today. I really want some answers about this die and hope someone here has the same one.

I have some Hornady dies, which work fine, but most of my stuff is RCBS and some Lyman and a little Lee gear. My customer service chats with RCBS have had fast happy endings. I had a single style primer seating tool that I paid $12.95 for, back in about 1980. It broke last year. Hmmm, lifetime warranty. I called them. They sent me the only one they had left that was like that, for free. It broke. I called them. They sent me the new model, also for free. Nothing else from them ever broke. So...buy RCBS gear.

The only issue I had with any Hornady stuff I have was with the Lock N Load beam scale. Sent three of them till I got one that worked. Seems the magnets were not installed the right way and there was no damping and beam would take forever to settle.

They gave me top notch service with it and also sent some free stuff for my LNL progressive press. Had all of it in just a few days.

I purchased my RCBS equipment back about 1979. That was when I started loading metallic. Since then I have not had any defects that I can remember with RCBS. Allthough I am not impressed with the old case trimmer collet design but they did re design that.

Today I buy Redding dies for quality and I replaced the old RCBS case trimmer with a Sinclair from Mid Way. Witch by the way I am still trying to get that order straightened out. It seams that you can call to let them know about shipping problems and they agree with and then repeat the issue the next day. That was a first from them and I hope to be the last.

My business with Mid Way has been taken care of and I am happy with dealing with them. They will bend over backwards to make it right.

I actually had the same thing happen with a set of 357 sig dies. Called hornady they sent the missing parts and a free hat within 2 days.
