Really Accurate Single Shot: Ruger No. 1 vs Encore Rifle

For whatever reason, a single shot rifle (as well as handgun) has been appealing to me lately. I've heard that the Ruger No. 1 is strong, but not as accurate as it could be.

What about the Encore Rifle? What kind of accuracy can you get out of it?

I have an Encore in 223,witha5.5-16 Nikon. It is the most accurate rifle I have seen. It is however hard to hold on a target with no rest because of it's weight. You will find the No. 1 easier in that regard.

As a happy No. 1 owner it pains me to say this, but from my experiences with both guns as well as from a mechanical accuracy standpoint, the Encore is more accurate than the No. 1.

I've never fired an encore but I own 6 number 1's and I can assure you that they are all accurate now. A couple were not when I bought them but with the accurizer that brownells sells they sure are now.

I've had both and the Encore wins. Since I heard factory barrels were kinda junky, I had mine built by SSK Industries using a Shilen Match grade barrel. That's the only grade JD Jones uses. This .17 Rem has shot 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards with full power loads (about 4000-4100 fps). You can put a Harris bi-pod on without any problem. Mine has factory synthetic stock. And I've also got a 50 cal muzzeloader barrel for it too, with a scope.

It's a sad fact that the gorgous No. 1 doesn't shoot as good as it looks

That has been my experience anyway. I've owned several in .223 and .243 and none of them were suitably accurate. A friend has an Encore that he says shoots half to three-quarter inch groups--I think it's a .223.

Still, those Rugers sure are pretty!

Also, there's a...

...big danger to the T/C.

There are some 16,745,921 combinations of barrel length and caliber.

Could you really stop with just one?

(...and yes, you can put a Harris bipod on a T/C rifle, carbine, or pistol. :) )

I'm going to go sit and look at my No. 1 RSI. One inch (or slightly less) is plenty good enough; and it sure is easy on the eyes. ;)

The way I've seen them make a Ruger #1 Accurate is to build a hanger that the forend attaches to thus free floating the bbl. This was several years ago so the factory may have changed but the forend is what throws the accuracy off IIRC.

Also would like to add if you can find a Browning single shot heavy bbl (old Winchester High wall design), they are superbly accurate. A 25/06 produced one hole 100 yd groups. A 243 less than 1/2".

My TC Encore Carbine with all factory parts would shoot Winchester 300 gr .45-70 into three shot .75 inch groups.
