So which books are you folks on TFL, using to rate the condition and value of firearms, and how often do you update them?

Book.....Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values.....every couple of years.

Pick every brain I find.

Experience
Buyin and sellin guns for over half a century.

Still get stung or pass on something that I should have bought.

Over priced can be found everywhere.
Under priced can also be found everywhere.

Almost the same as C.R. Sam

Mine is almost the same as the post by C.R. Sam:

Book.....Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun
and
Standard Catalog of Firearms by Schwing
I buy them both every year.

Pick every brain (twice) that I find. Use the internet heavily and buy and sell on it.

Experience....Buyin and sellin guns for forty-five years.

I also still get stung or pass on something that I should have bought (mostly cause I've run out of money buying more guns).

C.R. Sam is really correct here:
Over priced can be found everywhere.
Under priced can also be found everywhere.

What part of Idaho are you from?

I just take a gun to three gun shops and ask the owners what they'll give me for it. I average the offers and then I multiple by ten and I figure that's about what it's worth.

When I buy, I find three examples of the gun I want, average the asking prices, and offer 1/2 that amount.

So far so good.

Ditto with Sam and Elker.

Fjestad's Blue Book or the Standard Catalog. But the prices are only ballpark. Some are high, some are low.

There is overpriced and underpriced everywhere. Get stung, too.

Guess you just go by your experience after a while.

Personally, I rely on the prices being advertised in Gun List. It's a more realistic representation of what the market will bear than the books, IMHO. I've never seen guns selling for what the blue books say they're worth.

I then cruise the gun shows and shops; you get an idea of what dealers are paying (from Gun List) and what dealers are asking (shows, shops), and figure the value somewhere in between.

Just my $.02 - keep the change.

Elker-43, Boise Idaho, and to the rest of you thanks for the imput. The gun list, is that a periodical that can be subscribed to?

Most place's that carry Shotgun News carry Gunlist(bookstores especialy),and it looks like SGN in size and shape.

Here it is

I also forgot to mention the Gun List. I receive it by mail every two weeks and have used it for years to buy and sell and it is great!

It is the best periodical on the market and it is very neatly set up alphabetically. Large pages and generally 140 - 180 pages. It has everything for collectors, shooter, and gun supplies/parts.

Here is the URL www.gunlist.net

It is $37.00 per year and you receive 26 copies...A very good deal.

Happy shooting,

Remington model 788 .44 mag

Anyone know anything about these rifles? I am looking at getting one from a cousin of my wifes for $400 just wondering if that is a decent price or if it is too high.

I wonder why you opened a nearly ten year old thread to ask a simple question.

Go to the Art of the Rifle forum and ask your question there in a new thread.
