Before you guys freak out please take note that I am in Central America at the time this story takes place. These things happen every day.
Some time ago a friend of mine who lives out of the country and keeps a vacation house here for the summer, had asked me to keep an eye on his house and the young kid who was staying in it. I stopped by every evening to check out the house and make sure that jr. was not holding any parties that were too wild.
The house is 2 miles outside of the town I live in with no other houses nearby.
I left one of my workers outside in my truck with my double barreled sawed off 12 gauge shotgun. My .45 was in the shop for a barrel change and had not brought any other long arms as I did not think my errand would take long.
I hung out at the house for awhile and took advantage of the hot water shower (a luxury in these parts, and a sweet reminder of home) and after about an hour came back out to go home. As I stepped out off the house I felt and heard bullets whizzing by my face. I looked right and saw a truck parked about 300 meters away from the house and muzzle flashes but no rifle sounds, (and no wind) QUESTION: I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH SILENCERS> DO GUNS EQUIPED WHITH SILENCERS STILL SHOW MUZZLE FLASH?
The truck was running and my partner was listening to music and talking to his gal on the phone. The corner of the house shielded us from the line of fire but there was about 100 meters of road ahead of us so I jumped into the truck and told the man to step on it. We did and as we drove away I could see continued muzzle flash.
There are no houses near this one, and no reason for any car to be in the area, and the chance of kids plinking and accidentally firing near the house is almost non-existent.
I assumed it was the beginning of a robbery so I made a couple phone calls telling jr. to stay in the 9 foot compound, and brought in backup in the form of three trucks full of well armed buddies, but the culprits got away.
LESSON OF STORY. Never limit yourself to a weapon that is only useful for one thing. My Sawed off beauty, only works up to 15 yards, and this sucker was a lot farther than that. Even my 1911 would have helped me, but I did not have it. It was only due to the grace of God that I made it out ok(which may be why He let it happen)
If this situation had been a little more well planned by the culprits(or a little better aim entailed.) This could have ended quite differently.
I have since then always made sure I have something on hand to level the playing field. Heck even a 22. magnum would have been good.
