Real reason for acquiring handguns.

To be very honest, mine are mostly hobbie-toys. I have them because I like to shoot, adjust, modify, study how they work, hand load. A couple are CCW carry guns. But, I purchased hand guns and shot them long before there was a carry law in Michigan. Many people like to respond to the question: "What is your purpose for having handguns?", with an answer about "self-protection", hunting, etc. But, if I am honest with myself, my handguns are for fun far more than anything else despite much I and others fantasize about other uses.

The same reason I acquire leather bound books, Eyewinker pattern glass, and post cards of where I went to college.

They interest me, and make me happy.

I am fascinated by the mechanical aspects of handgun design. Interesting little machines.

Shooting also has some meditative aspects, besides the challenge of shooting well. When I'm "in the zone", the rest of the world disappears for awhile... very relaxing and a great release for the tensions of daily life

Yep

I like guns.

The whole experience of researching and choosing one to buy is fun. I like just having them, I like just looking at them. I like photographing them and I even like cleaning them.

On days when I can't go the the range, I'll sit down and field strip a gun and clean it for an hour or so. This is kind of strange because when I was in the Army I hated cleaning the M16 - but maybe that was because we'd come back from a field exercise on a Friday and weren't released until they were clean.

I also like dry firing them, and I do like actually shooting them.

I like talking about guns :D

dayman nailed it (I like your post too Jim, and CountZer0's too). I have one gun that is dual purpose (I guess tripple ... home defense, range, and carry), that's my Cougar. The rest are for fun and collecting. And I definitely want more !!! :D

Be the reason...Save a gun.

:DThere are millions of homless guns in the U.S.

Will you help get a gun a good home?
Will you assist the millions of gun owner of America to get guns of the streets and in to the homes of responsale citizens?

will you donate your hard earned money and save a gun from a liberal anti-gun lobby member.

Please...donate...buy, sell, trade...get a gun...Save a life.

My guns are tax deductable....I'm an instructor....hehe:D

You and me both. I have bought guns just to examine them in detail; a Luger, 1934 Baretta...and I really want a Ruger SC1911 just to examine. Sold the Luger and Baretta years ago when my curiosity with shooting, examining them was satisfied. If I did manage to find a SC1911 (no higher than $635), I know that after I worked with it for awhile, learned as much as I felt I could about it, I would just sell it...I have a Colt XSE Combat Commander that is my "keep'en" gun to fill that nich.
By the way, the Baretta 1934 was an abomination of impracticalness...but oh, so beautifully styled.

To be honest I've only bought 1 gun, even though I have several. I bought a Taurus .380 several months ago with the purpose of carrying it for self protection. I'm not 100% happy with of though and I want to upgrade also. I plan to buy a River SR9c in a couple weeks and maybe even a LC9. Both those will be for self protection as a CCW. The other guns I have were birthday or Christmas gifts and a couple were passed down from my dad and grandfather.

Guns are good if used correctly and I am happy about the fact that I can legally carry one with me in case me or my family are in danger.

The real reason I acquire handguns truly is for self defense.
And it's always good to have a few extra handguns stashed around the house.

All of mine have a function of some sort

I will not list all of my guns but I will list several reasons for owning several different types......

Big Game hunting requires a caliber adequate for the game you persue and a platform tailored to your specific shooting conditions and for me this requires more than one rifle.

Shotgun ownership we all know that various types of shotgun hunting require multiple types of guns. For me at this time I own a Mossy 500 with about a million diffierent configurations which is a hunting platform. I also own a plain jane HD shotgun that stays in one basic configuration 24x7.

Handguns for me are a simple function of having enough options to be able to CCW no matter what the situation. In other words I carry every day and I have some choices so that I can be armed no matter what my needed atire.

I have one handgun that is for training and general range fun which is a 1911 .22 by chiappa. But even that has a purpoouse.

The honest truth is that I could pair down my gun ownership to two firearms The mossy can be converted to take anything from the smallest of small to the biggest of big game. It could also be setup for home defense. I could then own only one handgun that was small enough to be carried every day and be done with it.

The fact is however the more this becomes a hobby the more we realize that a one gun solution is never the correct answer. Imagine trying to play a round of golf with only one club or skiiing all year on the same pair of skis. While it may be doable proficiency is dependant at least somewhat on our equipment.

Several years ago, a longtime friend of mine convinced me to buy my first handgun so I could go shooting with him. This has evolved to a more regular occurence since several of my co-workers have taken up shooting as well, and I've purchased a few more, as well as inherited one that has been in the family for nearly 80 years. I like experimenting with different ammo in each.

Although I don't CC, I do have one handgun for home defense.

I do not even own a firearm (yet) and I can say that my main reason for buying one will be for the leisure aspect. I've only shot a gun twice in my life and both times were just an almost mesmerizing experience.

In honesty, there will be only really ONE gun I will buy for "protection" and that will be a 12Ga for home defense. All handguns will more than likely be for the range and possibly one day competition if I find that I am a decent shot.

I have a blast just reading about different guns and stories and tips and tactics (etc) let alone being able to actually go out and shoot. I think my family and friends now think I have a gun "problem" just because I peruse forums regularly.

I never realized until I joined TFL that I'm not an actual "gun guy". I always thought I was. I never realized how many people have guns just for the sake of having another one to shoot, or not even, just to look at it.

My "collection" is purely utilitarian. I have a purpose for each gun and there is little or no overlap between them.

When I shoot, it is for a purpose. Maybe I'm checking zero before hunting season or finding a new varmint load. I never go shooting just to shoot. I find little enjoyment in it.

My handguns are for specific purposes. I acquired them for that reason only. One is for daily carry, the other is for hunting with rifle cartridges where actual long guns aren't allowed but handguns are.

I've always thought I might be somehow missing something. I don't seem to enjoy "tools" and other objects the way other people do.

I don't go boating for fun. Boats are for fishing. Yet, many people have a blast just riding in a boat.

I know people who are fascinated with carpentry tools. Coffee cups. Porcelain dolls. Milk jugs. Snowmobiles. Obviously, guns.

I don't get it.

I do seem to enjoy talking about guns though. Apparently. ;)

I Like 'em,,,

That's the one true reason I have so many.

If it were just for practicality I would own:
One shotgun,,,
One 9mm pistol,,,
One .22 plinking pistol.

I'm a sport shooter and collector,,,
So I buy because I see a gun I like and want it.

Simple as that.

Years ago I bought them for hunting and target shooting, but since I got my CHL, I have bought four snubbies, a Walther PPK/S and two Ruger LCP'S.
It's a new excuse to buy handguns!
