First and foremost how accurate is one? Is it that much better than a good (example DSA) FAL?

How durable?

Easy to maintain?

PArts availability?

Mags?

Thanx

The weapons are very reliable very accurate, and the mags can go from 10-25 bucks. Great guns I have a post ban you outa buy one though.

In order:

Very, probably about the same as a good DSA gun. Triggers usually are very bad though; get a PSG1 module.

Very. You're not going to wear one out.

Pretty easy to maintain. The roller locking recesses are a pain to clean, but no worse than most gas systems. Polygon barreled models are a joy to bore-clean.

Very good. Parts are plentiful and cheap.

Very good availability. Plentiful, relatively cheap, and very durable.

Capable of 1moa (most FAL's are not).

Super durable and reliable.

Trigger jobs from William's start at $50 and do wonders.

Lots of expensive accessories.

Real pre-ban prices are down right now, but still close to $2000.

You rarely hear the owner of one bad mouth it, they shoot and work well.

Let me ask this:

Are they $1,000.00 better than a DSA?

Do they all have polygonal barrels?

Are they chrome lined?

Are all real 91's pre ban?

It depends on what YOU want. I have all three of the main .308 battle rifles, I like all of them. The HK has some things I do not like such as no bolt hold open after the last shot, you have to have a thumb like an ape to manipilate the safety without changing your grip, if you reload the 91 is hard on brass, that is any that you can track down afterwards. Mine throws brass at least 3 -4 shooting postions to the right. The 91 is dead ass accurate and reliable. The FAL's I have are also reliable and service grade accurate, 3" at 100 yards with most surplus ammo. The M1A is probably the one I shoot the most, its accurate, I like the safety, parts are everywhere and scope mounting is easy. You wouldn't go wrong with either the 91/FAL or M1A or M1 Garand for that matter. Good Luck. Joe

Very good. Parts are plentiful and cheap.

I don't mean to contradict, but where do you find cheap H&K parts?? I find H&K pricing a buttstock for a few hundred dollars! Gag! Compare that to an AR-15 stock for maybe 60-80 dollars. Where can I find 'cheap' H&K replacement parts?

Just for reference, here's a list of what I find to be about average prices:

A good FAL is mechanically able to match a HK91 in accuracy, is far simpler to detail-strip, and is easy for anyone to work on. Yeah, try disassembling and reassembling the bolt and trigger group from an HK91 with just a screwdriver and yourself. Not anywhere near as easy.

I do still plan on adding an HK91 to my stable, but I'll keep my FALs for field work. Oh, you can build a FAL yourself for two hundred in tools (headspacing rods, guages, and rec. wrench). You'll need jigs and a large (and very accurate) press to put in a barrel on an HK.

Accuracy on my DSA FAL (standard barrel) has consistently been 3/4 moa with match ammo, and around 1.5moa with good surplus.

Charmedlyfe,
Is a screwdriver really needed in normal fielstripping?
I have a genuine G3 rifle and it`s disassembling and reassembling won´t require any tools at all.I find
very hard to believe that HK91 is less user friendly
than it´s military counterpart.

PS.
How expensive is a PSG
trigger group at your side of the pond?

Charmedlyfe

A screwdriver is not needed to strip a HK91 bolt. I do it with my bare hands all the time. I've never had to detail strip my trigger group, so that I can't comment on.

Weird to compare a post ban DSA with a preban HK91. Preban FAL's are similar in price.

Barrels are hammer forged and most are normal rifling. They seem to wear well despite the lack of chrome.

The 91 is easy to field strip, which includes tearing the bolt down. The trigger parts don't often fail, not an issue. No gas system to take apart or clean.

If you want a cheaper, high quality post ban, Greek made Springfield SAR-8's are just about HK quality and go between $1000 and $1500. Compare that to an all new DSA.

"Are all real 91's pre ban?"

They were made from 1974 to 1989.

There are no "cheap" replacement parts that are Real HK.
You can buy G3 parts guns pretty cheap from Shotgun News.

brouhaha,
The trigger group maintanance is also
something you can do with your bare hands.
On the other hand there has never been real
need to clean trigger group in field conditions.

I have both a 91 and an FN-FAL, I prefer the FN, for this simple reason. (and it's been said here before by others)

FN-FAL: small pile of big parts

HK: big pile of small parts.

What do you thinks is best in a battle rifle?

I don't get the big pile of parts theory. If you field strip a 91, the bolt is broken down to 5 parts, plus the trigger assembly, stock, mag and barrelled receiver. My AR15 has a more complex breakdown. I don't have a FAL, so I have to ask, how does a piston actuated gas gun have far less parts?

The "big pile of parts" is a load of bunk! :) Open your Gun parts catalog and look at the exploded views and parts lists for the G3 and the FN-FAL. The FN has 163 parts listed, the G3 has 105 parts listed.

Say again which rifle breaks down into a bigger "pile of parts"?

the hk will handle more dirt/abuse than the fal or m1a

the hk trigger is a killer because it was built to withstand a drop from a helicoptor without discharging

you can change everything on the hk (buttstock, trigger group, bolt and forearm) without tools

all the 91's i have seen had ploygonal rifling except the early ones imported by Harrington & Richardson

somthing the 91 can do is handle different loads without adjustment, everything from 110gr squibs to 200gr...it's all compensated for by the roller system, no messy gas system to deal with

is you shoot berdan primed mil-sup 7.62x51mm, you won't miss the brass you can't find...or you can get the clip on recoil buffer and they'll all fall about 3" away

Polygonal HK91's are relatively rare, more expensive, and mostly '70s imports. The SR9 post ban series was polygonal. The rest and G3 service rifles have hammer forged land and groove.
