Readily Convertible?

Ok, I give up expecting feedback. The most I will ever get is 5 or 6 replies.

BUT! I must ask.

How long does it take for a company to produce one firearm from raw materials?

If one guy at Berretta can start all the machines, and out comes enough parts to assemble 10,000 firearms in 24hours, does that mean that raw materials are "readily convertible"?

I highly doubt my mom, dad, wife, or children have the skills to machine ANY item; though, I maybe do. Does that mean I can't own raw materials?

If the BATF gets away with this, the line will be drawn in the sand. No matter if you think so or not, it will be drawn.

So, what is the average time a firearm company can turn raw materials into a firearm? This I really want to know.

Got me but I'm sure I could engineer a working firearm that would shoot at least once in less then 8 hours and I have no skills whatsoever. This case was a joke, I don't think 8 hours of manufacture is readily convertible by any strech of the imagination.

Agreed, wouldn't take ME 8 hours to turn a block of steel into a firearm. Well, I'm going to go ask Taurus roughly how long they take.

For a meaningful answer to your question, you first must define "raw materials".
for example: simple zip-guns can be manufactured from non-firearm related materials using hand tools in about an hour. However, the more complex the final product or the more "raw" the materials, the more time required for completion.

When you say RAW - do you mean that you have finished stock of the necessary metals around. Making stainless steel from ore is not trivial.

Well lets think of the current thinking of the government, when they say "readily convertible"

1. They hate guns in the hands of the people
2. They want all those guns out of the hands of the people
3. Bill of Rights doesnt apply to them in their eyes.
4. They "own" the Media (Praise the FCC).

So taking those 4 "ideals" into it, I would have to say anything that can be made into a firearm, explosive device will be considered "readily convertible", but hell you can make a car into a gun.

Mykl: Haven't talked to Taurus yet, as they don't have an obvious email on their site. I did take a few minutes to talk to one of my fellow machinists. He said that a few years back he made himself a nice little derringer in under 50 hours from stock. A zip gun could take, oh, 15 minutes, from stock shelf to firing.

Heck, 2 hours with a decent lathe and some Steel bar stock and "Ta-Da" one single shot firearm. Trouble is how many people have lathes capable of turning steel and how many people have the basic machining knowledge to do the job without ruining a lot of bar stock and some expensive machine tools.
For a good machinist I probably have over estimated the time.
