READ: The monkey wrench gang

Read it years ago along with most of Edward Abbey's other stuff.

The man had a good attitude.

To hell with being a team player.

The man still produces mixed emotions in me as I have evolved myself over the years a little. He did influence me. The land is part of me but I reject the Earth First type bastardization. http://desert.net/tw/11-30-95/cover.htm
Here is a worthwhile read from a Mexican writer L u i s A l b e r t o U r r e a who
communicates the problem better than I do.
We share a favorite quote on immigration: "Stop every campesino at our southern border, give him a handgun, a good rifle, and
a case of ammunition, and send him home. He will know what to do with our gifts and good wishes. The people
know who their enemies are."

Yeah I read it along with most of Abbey's other books, he was an interesting old curmudgeon. An "agrarian ." Very politically incorrect, promoted RKBA, quite libertarian in his political views. Interesting reading. The tree huggers (EarthFirst!, etc.)consider him their spiritual forefather however, as he is almost single-handedly responsible for the birth of the radical environmentalist movement. That book you speak of, in fact, is the bible, or the closest thing to it, to those misguided folks. The sequel (Hayduke Lives) was not quite as entertaining. His books are enjoyable; like Robert said, the man had a good attitude. Check out his last, and best, book sometime--The Fool's Progress. A long read but worth it.
