Looks good! I have a rail system for the one I am planning on putting together. Projects....ya gotta love em.

hey thanks...I think I'm addicted to modding...lol

is my ammo choice good? for plinking, the federal nato 556 is fine...what about my personal ammo?

I can't say that I desagree with your ammo choice as I don't have any experience with that caliber. The 762X51 ammo is a good round.

Isn't the Black Hills 77gr round a match round? Maybe Hornady's FPD line might be a better choice. Just my two pennies. Nice rifle, though. Is that handguard stock?

Match rounds might make a good home-defense round, but a round specifically designed for the job will be better-suited for it. Plus, I think the FPD line is a bit cheaper than Black Hills, so you can get more range time in, which is always a plus.

Real sweet, nice gun, congrats. I am using 62 grain FMJ steel core for HD, yes I know they will go through anything.

How do you like the Vortex StrikeFire Red Dot?? Have been thinking about getting one.

yeah 77Gr is hefty but will do fine with the 1:7 twist

I'm definitely ordering the FPD...thanks for the advice

the Vortex StrikeFire Red Dot is awesome...holds zero very well...optics are very nice, especially since it's only $150...google it and read the reviews...also look on youtube at the videos...just make sure you order the right one...there's a low mount and a high mount...I got the high mount

pturner67,
You made an excellent choice for your first rifle. I have a Spikes 16" M4 LE upper with a 9" Spikes BAR FF rail forearm (on a PSA lower) that is a superb shooter.

pturner67,
You made an excellent choice

The FPD line includes a 75-grain round, that could be the best choice for a 1:7 twist

Thanks guys!!

I have a question....

Do you guys keep your AR magazines loaded at home? I think the common sense answer would be yes since some of you might rely on it as a home defense weapon. I have 2 magazines loaded for my Glock and my AR is kinda just sitting there looking awesome but not prepared. I have 3 magazines for it. Should I keep them loaded or will that wear out the springs?

Thanks

I use PMAGs pretty much exclusively and always keep one or two loaded.

There's no problem in doing so - the main issue with keeping mags loaded is not weakening the spring. Constant compression doesn't typically weaken a mag spring - repeated cycles of expansion/compression (aka repeated use) are what weakens the spring over time.

The real issue is the feed lips creeping apart while loaded - which is why Magpul includes the little snap-on dust cover thing - to prevent feed lip creep over time with a loaded mag. Other mags (such as the Lancer mags) fight the problem by having reinforced steel lips.

The other nice thing about AR mags is that they are so cheap - if they wear out, just spend 10 or 15 bucks and get a new one (so much cheaper than pistol - even Glock- mags).
