re-chambering an M1 Carbine

Anyone here ever hear of this being done? Years back I had heard a rumor that there was a smith out there that would rechamber an M1 carbine to something around a .44 mag ? Maybe need a new barrel? I'd like to have one for the woods, but sometimes I wonder about the effectiveness of a .30 carbine in shortrange on whitetail.

There's a gunsmith who rechambers them to .45 Win Mag. There have been some articles on this, a couple of years back. You might try a search on the topic. Sorry I don't have any details on hand.

Scott, there's a guy in Greenville who has one. I think it was a LaFrance conversion to something impressive like .50 DE.

One of my buds who hunts in the low country uses am M1 with softpoints - no problems. Close range shots though.

Thanks Al. That's kind of the reassurance I was looking for. Our areas are very short range where we hunt too. I have a photo in my workshop of my dad back in 1943 or '44 with an 8 point buck he shot in Texas. In his hand is a BRAND NEW M1 Carbine he shot it with, and over the photo is the head of the deer mounted on the wall. No one that sees it can believe it was mounted in 1943 and still look as good. Your next question, how did dad get his hands on a brand new M1 in 1943? His dad was a bird colonel in the army and was one of Gen. Pattons right hand men. Kind of got anything he wanted!

The company that rebarrels the M-1 carbine to .45 Win Mag is in Fenton, MI. I don't remember the name. IIRC, they have had problems with the bolts deciding that they aren't going to take it anymore and shearing locking lugs.

You can't open up the bolt face too much and still retain enough case head support and bolt strength.

Hmmmm, I wonder how a 10 m/m conversion would work?
