RCBS beam scales

In most cases the 500 gets much better reviews than the 502. Also you do get what you pay for. I use digital for ease of use

Older RCBS scales were made by Ohaus in New Jersey. A few years ago RCBS moved production of them to China and QC was so bad the reputation was ruined and they ditched the old models and came up with new ones.

If I had to pick one, it would be an old scale and I really like the 10-10.

Also the Chinese made scales used the same casting (so it still had Ohaus made in NJ cast into it on the bottom but there was a little sticker beside that that read "made in China" it also said made in China on the box.

I've had my 5-10 for longer than I can remember and it still works great and yes it's an Ohaus built one. I've tried other scales over the years but this is my go to scale. Others sit boxed up in storage.

I was working on a RCBS scale when my wife got involved. She thought the beam was dark and dingy or something that shouted it need to be cleaned. So she took off with it and came back with a beam that was not dark or dingy, the dark and dingy was removed along with all the stamped hash marks and numbers.

I called RCBS and informed them she rendered the beam scrap. They did not seem to be a problem, they gave me a work order number that allowed me to send the scale to Ohaus, and then they changed their policy. They ask me to send the scale to RCBS for evaluation repair on replacement. I did not want a replacement because of the risk of receiving a replacement from Mexico or China. I ask them if they would replace the beam or send the glue on scale and the answer was 'no'.

I went to the next gun show and found 2 10-10 Ohaus beams that got separated from their scale base for $10.00. Now I have an extra plus another I am thinking of repairing with a copying machine.

Your enemies can do what they will but it takes a friend with good intentions to really mess you up.

Good work on finding replacement beams.

At post I have 4 scales-A Lee Universal-A Lyman 500-a small MTM digital that actually works pretty good-and my favorite a RCBS 10-10.Out of all of them I really like the 10-10-this one although is the made in China which hasn't seemed to effect accuracy.I have check weights and the darn thing is spot on with all the other scales-so I quit checking so often.I had a RCBS 5-10 that I wish I still had. They sure do not to seem to be made like the older Ohaus models.

I have been using a 10-10 scale since 1978 it works fine. I don't trust battery's to check my powder. The 10-10 is like a old cast iron skillet. "seasoned"

Although I'm sure there are those out there that have to have the latest and greatest.

I have a extra 10-10 that was willed to me. If you would like to make a reasonable offer. It's yours

I've gone digital/electronic. Still have my old 10-10 for just in case, but in about 10 years or so, no 'just in case' moments have arisen. Put the slide rule away too.

Me too. I had a 5-10 but after 30 years, it started giving inconsistent readings (fulcrum points got worn, I think). I got the 10-10 (5-10 no longer in production) and I love it. Works great.

I recently purchased a RCBS 10-10 that was missing the cover and the "tenths" sticky. Contacted RCBS and they sent the sticky and cover at no charge. I also re calibrated it. It's a good scale.

Also have a Pacific M scale that I purchased new about 40 years ago that still works fine. Sometimes older is better, and I think in this case that it is.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I would NOT trade my OHAUS DIAL-A-GRAIN scale for all the electronic scales made in the history of man. I've has two of those damndable electro scales and both were not worth the powder to blow 'em up. BOTH were RCBS models too now that I think about it.
DIAL-A-GRAIN.....TAKE IT TO THE BANK !
And so it goes...

Had a 505 years ago until I quit reloading, great accurate scale for small pistol loads. Now that I'm starting again I found a used Lyman D5 scale which is exactly the same scale from Ohaus only branded with a different name.

Have used electronic scales in a production setting but those were only weighing to .1 grams and not grains and that was an expensive scale. Most only weighed to .2 grams. So I cannot judge how sensitive a grain scale will be.

I prefer the 10-10 as well. Mine's probably 30 years old and still perfect.

What jmorris said above about the Chinese connection is all true except for one little detail..........RCBS didn't dump Ohaus for Chinese and ruin their line of scales......Ohaus went looking for cheap labor and found it in China. All Ohaus scales are now made in China except for their "lab" scales they sell to gov. & universities. So Ohaus scales like the 10-10 and the 501 are now Chinese-made.....with or without RCBS's name and green paint.

As for the new RCBS line of scales.....I don't know if they are Ohaus or not, Chinese or not. Maybe someone else has the scoop on those.
