Doc,

Lovely looking K98, I plan to buy an RC myself in the near future to keep my non RC 1939 660 Kreigsmarine company. I don't see any birds on the butt stock, refresh my memory ... did the Russians scrub the birds or does your have them still intact? Any other pics of any of the Russian markings on that rifle?

The birds are still on this rifle. There is also a Weimar eagle on the
stock. I took a pic of that for you. This is a mix-master rifle.
The DUV 42 series of K98's originally had laminated stocks with
cupped buttplates. This stock is from an earlier K98. But the
overall rifle has a nice presence about it that attracted me and
no RC's are 'original' anyway.

The Russian markings on this rifle include the two "X" marks on the
receiver, the electropenciled serial on the bolt, and the serial stamped
on the left buttstock. More than likely this rifle had shellac on the
stock from the Russians, but someone removed it. Much to
my satisfaction !

Thanks for the additional pics ... forgive me saying so but the birds on your stock don't look right to me - they look altered and not correct. The top eagle looks as though some kid tried to draw one on there, it doesn't even look like and eagle. I am thinking that perhaps the original Waffenamt were very faint after refinishing and somebody attempted to go over them again?

Look how weird the rays under the Eagle are on the bottom Wa ... the lines are not parallel or uniform - somebody has had a crack at them or faked them in my humble opinion. I've seen enough to spot the weirdos.

Observe my birds on my 660 for your comparison.

Weimar Era K98 Stock

It seems there are both a Weimar era eagle and the remnant of
a Nazi era eagle on this stock. I took a close up of this area of
the stock and that's what was revealed. I knew it had the Weimar
eagle, but had never identified the Nazi eagle before.

This stock's origins date to the Weimar Republic era. Some K98k rifles
were built prior to the Nazi regime. Evidently the rifle that this
stock was from was re-proofed during the Nazi era. Handling sometime
during the war, during it's Russia residency, or later degraded the
Nazi eagle proof into what we have now.

Yes I get that it is Weimar era mate ... I was refering to the Weimar Eagle on the bottom which didn't look quite right and if what I thought was some type of eagle by bubba above then that is good to hear. So a real bitsa it is then. I provided my own stock for comparison of the how an eagle should be compared to what I thought was some scratched on fake that had been added later above.

Yes, fakes ABOUND in K98 land. I have only one original
K98k. And I had it verified by the jury of "T-urd Busters"
over on Gunboards.com before I bought it. Without
the input of experts, you are rolling the dice with many
so-called original K98's being offered up today. They boinkers
get craftier and craftier as their previous work is exposed.

That is a cool stock on your rifle. Crispy stamps and great
color. Thanks for posting it up !

I damn well knew I could see an Eagle up top! ;)

Well there you go ... on closer inspection it still looks like it has been hit by sand paper but it looks far more legit than the other photograph; maybe just the angle, the light and my eyes together at once gave me that first impression. If you've been through the **** Busters at G'boards it must be certified ... or should that be crucified?

I must admit to the same regards the bottom mark ... it too looks much better and not a bit fuddled with your new fangled digi doohickie pic to explain it!

Great rifle either way.
