Rarity of S&W 586+ in 3 inch

I'm looking into these because I'm interested in that 7th round and hoping I won't notice the difference in size compared to a k-frame. I know they exist, but most of the pictures are of the L-comp which I don't want. Can anyone tell me how rare these are? Is this going to be a year's long wait for one to come up for sale?

If I were to have one made from a 4 inch, roughly how difficult and costly would it be?

Yes, I'm looking for the 586 in particular. I know the 686's can be had a bit more easily but I don't care for this particular gun in stainless

I've never seen any reference to the existence of a 3" 7-shot M586 other than the L-Comp, although I'll be the first to admit that they could exist and I just don't know it. :)

That said, AFAIK all 7-shot Model 586's in existence are from the Performance Center, as regular Model 586 production ended prior to the introduction of the 7-shot L frame (IIRC 2000 vs. 2004), and the recent "Classic" edition only came in 4" or 6".

I just bought the 3 inch 686 Plus (TALO).
It has the same grip and weight as the 4.2 inch K frame M66.
So, the difference in weight is about an inch of barrel worth.
They are very accurate. I can shoot it as well as a longer barrel model.
My first center fire revolver was a 6 inch M686 Port. I prefer the shorter barrel. I also had the 4 inch SSR, but traded it in on the 3 inch. The SSR is a very nice gun for those who prefer a that barrel length.
I have never seen any 586 versions of any length in recent times.

Best,
Rick

Sadly it looks like.you might be right about the 7 shot specifically. The two forums that I found are http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/190991-586-3-three-inch.html and http://www.smithandwessonforums.com...8649-show-me-your-best-s-w-357-magnum-10.html

However neither say that they are of the Plus variety and very well might be plain 6 shots. Would sending in a 4 inch 586+ to S&W and trying to have them install a 3 inch barrel be a possibility or just wishful thinking? This seems like the exact gun I'd want to carry, being that I love blued revolvers and don't want to settle for stainless.
