I'm always to curious how people determine what is comfortable when carrying. I've heard some people say width is the most important, then other say the length, etc. So I thought it would be interest to list all the possibilities and then vote to rank the following factors in order of importance. Let's see if there is any consensus as to what factors, or order of factors in the most important to provide IWB comfort. This is for IWB carrying specifically. Please vote and explain!

A very individual matter. For me, it's an overall balance. Slim is great, smooth is great, light is great, but frankly it's particularly important to me that the pistol be balanced. I find my Brown Kobra Carry, in my Brommeland Max-Con V, to be as comfortable as my G38 Glock in my Bluegrass Hybrid.

Ummmm... I didn't do anything in the world like this.
When I decided to get my license, I knew I was going to need an EDC.

I kicked around many ideas but decided to simply buy what I wanted. I wanted a 10mm because I'm very fond of the chambering and I have been since my formative years.

The only viable candidate (IMO, of course) for a carry gun in this caliber was a Glock 29. So I bought a Glock 29.

I chose to carry IWB because I can feel it all the time, so I don't need to worry that it's there.

So... comfort... I suppose I wish it were thinner. If it were shorter in the grip, it would be even easier to conceal. (it's not hard to conceal in the first place) If it were shorter in length, it might poke in to me a little less in any position I might sit in. (it doesn't bother me currently)

I wanted the gun, so I bought it and I carry it religiously. It's not supposed to be comfortable, it's supposed to be comforting. And it is. (so say Clint Smith)

The W's are what count for me! Weight and width, in that order. Of course now that I think about it, a full size 1911 is easier to CCW than my Sig 229 IMHO.

Either way, a HEAVY and THICK gun doesn't make the best CCW for most people.

Having posted a few polls in my time, let me just say that setting up this poll and posting it took some effort and time and reflects a good bit of forethought.

Thanks John!!

I must agree that it made my head hurt as well while making but I found it interesting. Every person I talk has a different Idea as to what factors are most important. Some people think length is the most important just becuase it's the most obvious. Some say Width is, some say grip height is the most likely area to print. Then of course there is those who don't even carry but have an opinion and what they believe to be most important.

My hope was that a majority some sort of consensus would appear I must say that I am surprised and happy to admit, I already got something out of this. I am very suprised to see that Grip Ht, Width, Weight, Length is leading as of now with 22%.

When I first started looking into CCW, I thought it was Length, Weight, Width, Grip Height - How silly?? (sorry to those who voted that way). As I posted this poll, I thought it was width, weight, grip, length but I now that I think about i it the leading option right now does makes sense. I mean the point is for it to remain concealed, right. Weight can never prints and lngth is not very likley to print, unless you carrying a monster. I am finding that weight isn't even that a big a deal if you get a quality belt and holster. I always heard people say that and it wasn't till I tried it that I agree now. It helps!!

I just realized why the CCO 1911 is soo awesome!!

Length, Grip Height, Width, Weight for me.

In a Revolver anyting over 4" in a typical IWB holster and I can't seem to sit down. 5" seems to be my limit in an auto.

Grip hight next. A longer grip is going to need some kind of forward can for me to be able to conceal it.

Width doens't seem to be too much of an issue for me. With a good holster, I can conceal most any Service Size revolver or double stack auto.

Again, a decent holster makes weight not much of an issue for me personaly.

My standard carry is a 4" Python, or a 5" 1911, so neither are real lightweights, but are plenty comfy with the holsters I use.

I'm only the second one to vote for Length, Grip, Width, Weight

Length- I carry a GLOCK 20 with the 6" barrel. When I sit, it's maybe an inch above the chair. If I really plop down on a hard wooden chair, the muzzle will actually hit the seat, so that's the limit for me.

Grip Height- I'm not sure how much this really matters because my gun is already full size. But if they made longer grips, I don't think I could conceal it.

Width- Just doesn't bother me. I have a double stack G20 on each hip. Just make sure to get big pants and a long belt!:p

Weight- Also doesn't bother me. I'm not particularly interested in my body's comfort. If it's uncomfortable, too bad. I'm not compromising.

Im going to say none of the above.

Because i have carried or do currently carry several big guns all with at least 4 inches and 40oz to boot.I just love carrying most anything and my likes and dislikes are kinda weird.

It comes more down to a want.If i want it bad enough and i like handling it,i buy it and carry it.

Infact i have only found 2 guns i really hated after i shot them,a friend let me shoot his lcp(didn't like how it handled) and a colt pony mustang,to which i bought it shot it took it apart cleaned it and spent 2 weeks trying to put it back togather.

If the last option would have been comfort, . . . I would have voted, . . . because that is what works for me in IWB carry.

I have holsters that couldn't carry a single shot .22 derringer comfortably, . . . so I don't use em. The ones I do use, . . . will carry whatever gun I want to carry.

All about comfort for me, . . . for if I am comfortable, . . . I will carry. If it hurts, . . . it stays at home.

May God bless,
Dwight

I read Sevens' post and am impressed by his focus single-mindedness. But with so many choices out there, I have been unable to resist temptation, and as a result, my journey has been longer, with more twists in the road.

Since I got my CHL about five years ago, I have been on what I call The Quest For The Perfect CCW. In that time I have probably bought 25-30 handguns...and sold most of them.

I'm not at all sure that the journey is complete, but it sure has been interesting and (mostly) enjoyable. :)

As long as I don't lose too much money on each purchase and sale then all is well. Nearly all were bought used, and sold for approximately what I paid, and used holsters sell pretty well too.
