Ranger Report- way cool, with major bugs

Just took out two .45s for a trip to the range. One is my now totally trustworthy SA Ultra Compact (thanks, George!) which was a total delight this time around. 150 rounds without a hitch. The other is my lovely, brand new STI Ranger, which, just like the one in the magazine review, gagged on the last round each and every time. I am hoping that this is a magazine problem, and will order a couple of new mags to try. The gun itself, on the first 6 shots, was great. A really beauty to look at, excellent fit and finish, and sooo thin that carry should be easy. The 4 inch barrel seemed easier to keep on target than the SA's 3 1/2 inch. I would love some more input from Ranger owners on how to make this one as sweet as my SA. thanks, Gary

Talked with STI today, and will send the Ranger off by UPS tomorrow. Looks like I bought an early model. Folks on the phone seemed great, and will get things ship shape within a week. Feels like great service so far. I'll repost when the Ranger come back. Gary.

Perfect customer service from STI. I had bought what turned out to be an older model of the STI Ranger. The bugs have since been fixed on the newer models with a new mag and a different guide rod. STI asked me to send them the gun, which I did on Tuesday, UPS Next Day. On Friday I received the Ranger back, new parts installed, some of which required some machining on the frame, running like a Swiss watch, and looking like someone had taken the time to buff and polish the slide. No charge, no hassle and a return from Texas in less than three days! After hearing all the horror stories on TFL, I though you all might like to hear how it’s supposed to work. Gary

I had been looking at buying one of these, and thought I would need to have the local shop order me one. I went to look today, and they have one. Felt great and seemed solid. Is there a way to tell if it's a recent pistol with the improvements? I've emailed you a few questions. I feel the only drawback to the Ranger is the shortened mag, and the possibility of feeding problems due to the mag. If function is fine, seems like the PERFECT carry piece.

Price is $845, and I see retail on STI's website is $976. One of the article reviews they refer to on their website states a retail price of $875 (or something close), so I think the pistol I looked at today may be an older one with the older price. I would probably need to send it in for the same tuning that you had done to yours, but still probably would be a good deal?????

Steve, I sent you a reply to your EMail. I put 100 mixed rounds through the STI today, and came back feeling great about the gun. Not a single burp, and I had some nice paper at the end of the day. Coming onto the target seems quick, and for double taps, I was able to stay on the spot pretty easy. Cleaning with a lot easier with the new guide rod. I've taken it out of the safe twice tonight, just to look and play. Nice gun. And a great company to do business with! Gary
