Range trip with the new Rossi

Woke up this morning to heavy rain. As a mason this could mean only one thing. First real full day off after 2 long break-less weeks of trying to cram everyone in before the holiday.... time to go SHOOTING! I packed up my new .44 mag Rossi 92, targets, a meager assortment of ammo and headed to the range.

By the time I got to the closest of three ranges (45min drive) The rain had pretty much stopped and the temp came up to a warm 53*. Still pretty breezy with a 17mph R-L diagonal crosswind even in the baffles.

I Just picked up this Rossi last Friday. It's the 24" octagon barreled model with the plain blued receive in .44 Magnum. It's a group of firsts for me. It's my first true pistol caliber lever action, first Rossi and first .44 mag in either pistols or rifle.

This was my first time really getting to sit down and go over the rifle. I had previously fired 6 shots, the day I bought the rifle I shot a 25yard 5 round group to make sure the sight were on. The sixth shot I fired the next morning to take my first deer of the season on opening day.

First impression of the rifle, seems very well built and fitted, bluing and metal finish is nice. The action is slicker than my early 80s Marlin. I brought a box of 240gr fiocchi .44 mag LNFP, 180gr PMC bronze JHP .44 mag and a box of 165gr critical defense FTX .44 special.

first 5 rounds with the fiocchi

75yard 3 round string with the fiocchi after sight adjustment

Accuracy wise the critical defense was the most accurate with average groups 1.5" at 50 and 75 yards. the best was 1.25 widest 2"

The Fiocchi came in second with the tightest group measuring 2.25" @ 50 yards.

Now the pmc bronze was the odd one. I've always found it to be very high quality and consistent in every caliber I've used it in. But the little rossi didn't seem to care for it much. Even off a rest this was about par at 50 yards.

Felt recoil with the PMC was MUCH heavier than the fiocchi, and after the 2nd or 3rd magazine tube full with that crescent butt plate with the larger width of my shoulder ...somewhat painful. The fiocchi was downright pleasant and the .44 specials? A total BLAST...after squeezing the trigger on the first .44 special, I literally had a big goofy grin on my face as the cycled and fired the other 11. The specials reminded me of shooting a .22 mag but with more boom. The rifle Flew through the .44 specials with no hang-ups. With the full .44 mags it loaded just fine, but cycling out a spent case, it was very stiff with more than 6 rounds in the magazine. I'll chock that up to being not broke in yet.

I only have one gripe, the rear sight elevator latter isnt cut well. With the heavy hitting PMCs every round knocked the ramp down a notch. Not Really an issue as I have several others in my "gun box" but it did cause a few "flyers" during the groupings :o

All in all, having it for less than a week with 220 rounds down and a whitetail already under it's belt. I'm pretty impressed with the rifle.

Very nice, I've wanted to get a lever action for some time and have been giving Rossi serious consideration. Thanks for the review of your gun.

My Rossi is nowhere as accurate as yours, but then again mine is a handgun (ranch hand). I found the action very stiff on mine also. I had to bang the lever action fairly hard forward to get the lift gate (what ever it’s called) to bring the next round up.
What I did was a complete dissembley and was surprised at the grease that was in the action. Cleaned the inside, oiled it well and watched a movie working the action. Dissembled it again cleaned and used a small amount of grease, I am now surprised how smooth it is.
My only other complaint is the loading gate. Edges are way to sharp on mine. Very hard on the thumb.
I would buy another Rossi in a second.

Berdan--nice rifle and great write-up! Sounds as though you landed a fine little rifle there. I have the very same model in 38/357 and have been very pleased with it. Your comment on the deer reminded me of something regarding my Rossi. On its first outing, a friend and I had a small public range to ourselves. I had just returned to the line from setting up my target, and as I turned around I saw a nice little doe standing on top of the berm looking back at us. One of those moments where this image of your half empty freezer pops into your head. Anyway, my senses quickly took hold and we watched as it eventually disappeared behind the berm. Good thing too, as the sheriff stopped by about ten minutes later to see how we were doing.

Rossi is undervalued

Maybe a little rough out of the box, but a serious quality firearm. Love mine. Fun to shoot.

Those are very nice little lever actions. I think it's great that you killed a deer with it before you even had a full magazine through it.

I had this in 38/357 and loved it. Took the factory sights off and put highviz sights on and it was even better. Wish I would not have sold it. :-(

Very nice looking .44 lever action, and shoots good to. I know you'll enjoy It. I have a Rossi 92 in 38/357 w/20" rd. bl. It worked well out of the box, I did a lot of work on It anyway to make It slicker & better looking. I love mine, shoot It more than all my other CF rifles put together.

Thank you all :)

After fixing the rear sight elevator issue....this thing in like a freak'n lazer:cool: By far my favorite shooter now.

Mine is the stainless round barrel. I was very impressed with the fit, finish and bueatiful wood. I also prefer to shoot 44 special in it as well as my Blackhawk.

Welcome to the world of the Rossi 92! Have had a dozen or so of them--16-20-24"--over forty years, mostly pre safety. Hoot to shoot, slick (some more than others out of the box as mentioned) and no trouble of any lasting significance with any of them. I have found I've preferred the gentler curve of the 16-20" carbine butt more than the sharp, narrow crescent of the "antique" rifle butt...and have thought of making a hybrid of sorts --a carbine/long rifle--some day "just because." A shotgun butt's another way to go that'd solve much if the sore shoulder issue but I admit to liking the old west look of the curved butts!
