Range Test - SS Ruger GP100 6" Heavy Barrel

I took my GP100 out to the range for the first time and I have 1 word...WOW!

I went to my local outdoor range, there were about 10 people shooting paper with their .32's, 9mm, .40 semi's...I loaded up my hand cannon, walked down to the line and...BOOM!...evryone stopped to see what I was shooting and wanted to try it out (not many wheelgun shooters at my range).

I was shooting 3" groups from 15 paces (approx 45 ft) standing, single action which I was very happy with considering I didn't adjust the rear sight at all.

Shot some .38sp and .357 double action and understandable the accuracy was not as good as single action. Still hit paper plates 6 times from 30-40 feet two handed, 1 handed was not as good (need more practice).

The recoil with .38sp with the 6" heavy barrel was a great feeling "push" very manageable recoil with little snap. My 5'4" 106lb. wife shot it with .38 and loved it, although the gun was very heavy for her to hold for any great length of time so that turned her off a little.

The recoil with .357 was also very manageable but of course had MUCH more snap. The 6" barrel handled it nicely.

I definately need to shoot it more to get the trigger worked out.

All in all it is a GREAT shooter, definately an attention getter and it is a BLAST to shoot!

I am VERY pleased with my decision!

6" GP was my first handgun and by far my favorite.

They are really excellent. For someone who is a shooter and not a Hunter that
needs .44 power. The GP100 six incher is superb. You get some real power out of the six inch tube with the .357:) My first DA revolver was a 6 inch RUGER357
i've loved them ever since:)

I truly believe that the GP100 is one of the finest examples of what a .357 is all about. It truly is fun to cap off some REAL .357 loads at the range. Most people have never heard or fired a real Magnum in their lives.

Anyways, take the time to get use to the long DA trigger pull. I've spent 3,000 rounds learning how to fire DA and I can honestly say that I shoot DA darn near as accurately as SA from a two-handed stance. At 45' I group 3" with DA pulls. From a rest the gun is more than capable of 1" rested 45' groups.

The best part: I'm really not worried about hurting this gun. Hot loads? No worries. 1700fps out of a 110gr bullet? no problem. Hot 180 gr loads? Not a problem.

It's a fantastic gun. Now, type less and shoot more!
