Range test - Kahr P40

Picked up my Kahr P40 a couple weeks ago and just took it to the range today for the first time. Had two boxes of Winchester White box 165 gr. FMJ to run through it for the break in period (200 rounds according to Kahr, I was going to get more.)

The first magazine came partly out after three rounds, reset the mag, worked the slide and fired again, the same thing. I adjusted my grip on the second magazine making sure I wasn't pressing the mag release and it was still doing it. Adjusted my grip even more, to the point of ridiculous keeping only the middle and ring finger on the grip and the thumb straight out and the magazine hit the floor.

I pulled the slide off and went to the gunsmith at the range who said the problem is probably a weak spring on the magazine release causing it to move out during recoil. He recommended I call Kahr because it is under warranty. Since it was past 4:00 Eastern Time when I got home, I will have to call tomorrow to see what they are willing to do. I fired a total of 30 rounds through it before giving up in disgust. By that time every round was causing the magazine to release.

It is unfortunate that this is happening, I was hopeful this gun would work fine out of the box. I know people here have had problems with the polymer Kahr’s but being the eternal optimist, and really liking the gun from a size, weight, feel, power aspect, I bought it anyway. I liked firing it, recoil was not a problem and the gun shot very accurately. If I can get all the bugs worked out and feel confidant that it works flawlessly, I am planning to use it as my primary carry weapon.

I will post back here when I talk to the people at Kahr and let you know what is going on.

P-40

I had a P-40 for a very short time, was able to put about 250rds through it, It was flawless and a great shooter..

I had to return it because it was shipped mistakingly into my state and not legal for me to buy..:barf:

I hope you sold it back to your dealer at "Full Retail" prices plus a bit of inconvenience charges.:D

Good Shooting

RED,

He rufunded the full sale price, I spent $60.00 on ammo though.

I could have kept it and told him to screw:D because the I legaly bought the gun, he illegally sold it to me.

My consious got the better of me. :barf:

He did say my next purchase would be at his cost, but I think I've bought from him since and forgot about his offer.

had the exact same problem when I bought a P40. Took it back to my shop and they sent it back for warranty repair. I exchanged it for a P9. No problems at all with it except the trigger pin thing - which they fixed.

I'm certainly not defending Kahr, but I have a P40 that I frequently use for CCW. So far, I've put approximately 500 rounds through it and never experienced any magazine release problem. When I was shooting it yesterday, for the first time I did have a few times when the slide locked open with rounds still remaining in the magazine (it's never done that before). I haven't diagnosed what the cause was, but I did perform a very thorough cleaning of the gun tonight and will try it again soon. I love this gun--I'd hate to have to send it back for repairs. I'm hoping that it was somehow related to the CCI Blazers I shot for the first time, yesterday.

bikeguy

Hey Bikeguy,

Did Kahr contact you about why your P40 was dropping the magazine while fireing or just offer you a trade? I would like to know if it is a problem they have seen before or if I am going to blow their minds with this problem.

On a side note, while dry fireing this evening, I noticed that I might have been touching the magazine release with my trigger finger. I have long skinny fingers and was using the second digit to pull the trigger. When the trigger is pulled fully I can hit the magazine release with my trigger finger. Anyone else have that probelm or should I just adjust my grip? I am fairly certian this is not the cause of the problem but just want to be sure.

Thanks for your responses.

I wouldn't sweat it too much... Seems like a gun magazine, may have been Combat Handguns, reviewed the P40 and the one and only thing to go wrong was the mag release. Kahr sent them the part and it worked great for them or so they said. They get lots-o-ad dollars to "like" products.
Anyway I have a P40 and so far so good after 340 rnds. My girlfriend shot it and was limp wristing a little bit and that was causing the slide to be just off of a full return.
Had some bad primers w/ some S&B FMJ, but that was an ammo issue (3 bad primers outta the same box)... BUT I've shot 3 boxes of UMC FMJ and 40 rnds of Federal Hydra-shok without one bit of fuss at all. After hearing of other S&B incidents with primers, I'm done with them.

p.s. the only thing that I'm having trouble with is my mind messing with me about it being striker fired. I still feel the tiniest bit "nervey" when I'm carrying it. (with one round in the pipe of course)

update

Called Kahr today and talked to Larry who was very nice and helpful. He told me some of the polymer frames were too large in the magazine well and the shock of recoil would cause the magazine to come out.

Anyway, after discussing the problem he sent FexEx to pick up my gun and ship it to Kahr for repairs. He didn't say how long it would take but he did say if he had to replace the frame I will have to have it shipped to a FFL to make it leagal.

I would rather it be a mag release issue so I didn't have to do that, the dealer I bought it from is an hour and a half away.

I will keep updateing as I learn more.

Never actually talked to Kahr about it, went straight back to my shop and they shipped it back for me. I just asked the shop to have them send me a P9 instead.

When the P40 was tested in some magazine (can't remember which), they had a problem with it in that the magazine release broke.

Hope all goes well with yours. Just remember - it will be a bit of a wait. Love my P9, but hope I never have to send it back to Kahr again.

Talked to Larry Mayers at Kahr on Friday, the 21st, and he asked me to send it in for them to look at. They received it in on Tuesday and called my back on Wednesday telling me the magazine well was too loose and they had to replace the gun.

Since I went fifty miles away to buy the gun, I got a local pawn shop, FFL dealer, to receive it back for me. It will cost me $25 to get the new gun but Kahr is willing to send a spare magazine to offset the cost. The pawn shop sent the FFL paperwork Thursday so I am looking at another week before I get my gun back.

All in all, I am very satisfied with the customer service at Kahr. Larry was great, doing all he could to help me out and make things right. I hope the new gun has zero problems, sucks having problems even with the freebies they are tossing in.:(
