Range Report WASR 10/63

Well I completed my finishing job on the wood stock on my 10/63 and then it was time to take it and my newly acquired site adjustment tool to the range. After several rounds on the 25 yard range I managed to get two very close together and one errant. None of these were dead center but pretty close. Go to the 100 yard range and see what it will do. Was pretty much all over the place although all still on paper. Long story short I finally ended up with three shots, one an inch high and about two and a half inches left, one about a half an inch high and about two and a half inches right, and the last one about an inch higher than that. Now my eyesight isn't what it used to be and this was with open sights but I was disappointed. Range officer told me I should be satisfied it shoots that well. I feel like I could get it closer with a scope. But I really don't want to scope this rifle. I like the look of it as it is. What do you guys think?

Bench, kneeling, off hand? How were you shooting? Also I have noticed that I shoot better with an AK when I bring the stock up on my shoulder a bit.

The AK-47 and its variants weren't exactly designed to be precision rifles. You may be able to get better groupings with a scope but don't expect to make quarter sized holes at 100 yards. This may also depend on the brand of ammo you're using. I used to own a WASR-10/63 myself and it was a hoot to shoot and even at 50 yards for me I was slightly all over the place. To me the AK is a fighting weapon, not a long range precision target gun. I did end up selling my WASR-10 in favor of a Polish Milled 1960 AK-47. I find it to be more accurate than the WASR.

I'm kind of tired today, so maybe my math is wrong, but that's about a 5" group at 100 yards? That's not horrible.. not the best either. An AK in my opinion that shoots 3" groups at 100 yards is definitely a keeper, so 5" isn't too bad. Maybe try another type of ammo, or maybe have someone else try and see what kind of groups they can get.

Going to try both of these suggestions.

Bench. Strong hand. And I was kind of struggling to find a comfortable shoulder position/cheek weld that I could get both a decent sight picture and have the buttstock firm.

No I don't expect that but I would like to at least get the thing to occasionally punch the center of the target. I guess a two inch group was what I had in mind.

Thanks for the suggestions all.
